PAN-Aadhaar Link Deadline Today: Steps, Penalty, Status Check Guide
PAN-Aadhaar Link Last Date Today: Steps, Penalty

The clock is ticking for millions of taxpayers across India. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has set December 31, 2025, as the final and mandatory deadline for linking your Permanent Account Number (PAN) with your Aadhaar card. This crucial step is required to maintain the validity of your PAN and ensure seamless access to financial and tax-related services.

What Happens If You Miss the PAN-Aadhaar Link Deadline?

Failure to link your PAN with Aadhaar by the end of today will have immediate and serious consequences. According to the CBDT mandate, PAN cards not linked with Aadhaar will become "inoperative" from January 1, 2026. An inoperative PAN is not just a number on a card; it loses its legal standing.

This means you will face significant hurdles, including the rejection of your Income Tax Returns (ITR). Furthermore, an inactive PAN will disrupt your financial activities. You may encounter difficulties in opening new bank accounts, conducting high-value transactions, applying for loans, or making investments where PAN is mandatory.

Who Specifically Needs to Link PAN with Aadhaar?

While the directive applies broadly, the Ministry of Finance issued a specific circular on April 3, 2025, clarifying the scope. The rule particularly targets individuals who were allotted their PAN using an Aadhaar Enrolment ID.

As per the circular, every person who received a PAN based on an Aadhaar application Enrolment ID submitted before October 1, 2024, must intimate their Aadhaar number to the tax authorities. The notified authority is the Principal Director General of Income Tax (Systems) or Director General of Income-tax (Systems). The deadline for this intimation is the same: December 31, 2025.

How to Link PAN with Aadhaar and Check Status

Linking your PAN and Aadhaar is a straightforward online process. You can complete it through the official Income Tax Department portals: incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in or incometax.gov.in.

Here are the basic steps to follow:

  1. Log in to the e-Filing portal using your PAN as the User ID.
  2. Navigate to the 'Profile Settings' section and select 'Link Aadhaar'.
  3. Ensure the details like name and date of birth match in both PAN and Aadhaar records.
  4. Enter your Aadhaar number and validate using the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.

To check the linking status, visit the 'Link Aadhaar Status' option on the portal and enter your PAN and Aadhaar numbers. The system will confirm if your linking was successful.

With just hours left before the deadline, taxpayers are urged to act immediately to avoid the inconvenience and penalties associated with an inoperative PAN. This move by the CBDT is aimed at creating a more transparent, accountable, and streamlined tax administration system by eliminating duplicate and fake PANs.
