Punjab Tax Crackdown: 200 Vehicles Seized, Rs 7 Crore Goods

In a significant move against tax evaders, the Punjab taxation department has conducted a major enforcement drive in the iron and steel sector, detaining more than 200 vehicles and seizing goods valued at approximately Rs 7 crore. The operation specifically targeted bogus billing and the movement of goods without proper documentation, with penalties for violators expected to surpass Rs 3.5 crore.

Details of the Enforcement Drive

Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Cheema announced that the state Investigation & Preventive Unit (SIPU) of the taxation department executed this strategic, large-scale enforcement drive. The operation was heavily concentrated in the state's prominent iron and steel belt, including Mandi Gobindgarh, Khanna, and adjoining areas. The primary objective was to decisively curb tax evasion occurring through illegal practices.

Vehicles and Goods Seized

Minister Cheema revealed that more than 200 vehicles transporting iron scrap and finished steel goods were detained for rigorous verification during the special action. The total quantity of intercepted goods is estimated to be over 2,400 metric tonnes. Preliminary scrutiny indicated that several consignments were moving either completely without proper invoices and e-way bills or were supported by highly suspect documentation.
