Uttar Pradesh GST Revenue Jumps to Rs 9,731 Crore in February 2024

In a significant fiscal achievement, the Uttar Pradesh state tax department has reported a robust collection of Rs 9,731 crore in Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue for the month of February 2024. This figure represents a substantial increase of Rs 352 crore compared to the corresponding period in the previous year, according to an official government spokesperson. The growth is largely credited to the ongoing rationalisation of tax rates and the simplification of administrative processes under the GST 2.0 framework.

Annual Collection and Technological Enhancements

Cumulatively, the department has registered an annual collection of Rs 1,03,779 crore up to February, which is Rs 402 crore more than the same timeframe last year. A key driver behind this performance has been the strategic improvement of digital systems, including the e-invoice, e-way bill, and online return filing platforms. These enhancements have made the tax filing process considerably simpler for taxpayers, thereby reducing instances of tax evasion and encouraging voluntary compliance.

To further bolster transparency and efficiency, the department has implemented an artificial intelligence (AI)-based return scrutiny system. This advanced technological tool has already analysed data from over 1.59 lakh taxpayers, involving transactions worth approximately Rs 48,000 crore. Additionally, initiatives such as compliance reviews of judicial orders have been launched on a pilot basis to ensure stricter adherence to tax regulations.

Anti-Evasion Measures and Sectoral Outreach

In a proactive move to curb revenue loss, the tax department has intensified its campaign against bogus firms and fraudulent activities. Through rigorous investigations, the department has exposed Input Tax Credit (ITC) irregularities amounting to Rs 2,166 crore. So far in the current financial year, recoveries have totaled Rs 1,642 crore, with additional arrears of Rs 2,406 crore under GST and Rs 711 crore under VAT reclaimed. This represents a remarkable increase of Rs 1,939 crore compared to the previous year's recoveries.

The department has also engaged in extensive outreach efforts, conducting dialogues with traders across all 75 districts of Uttar Pradesh. These discussions focused on GST reforms, return filing procedures, e-invoice mechanisms, and e-way bill compliance. Furthermore, targeted meetings with brick-kiln owners have yielded positive results, with revenue from this sector reaching Rs 47.62 crore in January 2026—more than double the collection recorded in December.

The combination of technological innovation, stringent anti-evasion measures, and stakeholder engagement underscores Uttar Pradesh's commitment to enhancing tax administration and revenue generation under the GST regime.
