Aurobindo Pharma has made a strategic entry into biologics contract manufacturing with the launch of TheraNym Biologics, one of India's largest dedicated biologics contract manufacturing organizations (CMO). The facility, located in Borpatla village in the Hatnoora mandal of Sangareddy district, represents a ₹1,200-crore investment aimed at expanding large-scale biologics production from the Hyderabad region.
Facility Details and Job Creation
The TheraNym facility, situated approximately 45 minutes from Hyderabad's Financial District, is expected to generate over 1,500 jobs. It is equipped with 15 KL bioreactors, downstream processing suites, aseptic fill-finish capabilities, and quality control laboratories.
Government Support and Vision
Telangana's IT and Industries Minister Duddilla Sridhar Babu, along with Science and Technology Minister Damodar Rajanarsimha, inaugurated the facility. Minister Babu emphasized that Telangana is working to position Hyderabad as a major hub for advanced medical research and manufacturing, covering biologics, vaccines, cell and gene therapies, and treatments for cancer and rare diseases. He stated that the government is preparing a comprehensive roadmap to build a world-class ecosystem across the entire value chain, from research and development to commercial-scale manufacturing.
Minister Babu highlighted several initiatives, including the new life sciences policy, One Bio Hub, Green Pharma City, and the Life Sciences Hub, as efforts to strengthen Hyderabad's standing as a global biotechnology destination and expand the 'Made in Telangana' brand. He also urged companies to partner with the government on skill development to create an industry-ready workforce.
Strategic Focus and Global Reach
According to Aurobindo Pharma, TheraNym is designed to meet international regulatory expectations and will manufacture advanced therapeutics for cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Exports are planned to multiple markets, including the United States, subject to approvals and customer requirements.
Aurobindo Pharma Vice Chairman and Managing Director Nithyananda Reddy stated that building on the company's aspirational foray into biosimilars with CuraTeQ, Aurobindo is now prioritizing this high-growth segment as a core differentiator with the strategic addition of TheraNym Biologics for contract manufacturing.
Aurobindo's CEO for Biologics and Director Dr. Satakarni Makkapati noted that TheraNym marks a defining moment in large-scale biologics manufacturing in India and is being positioned to cater to the supply chains of global pharma giants.
Anchor Customer Partnership
Aurobindo announced that MSD (Merck Sharp & Dohme) will serve as TheraNym's anchor customer, with the partnership intended to add capacity and capability to MSD's supply chain for biologic medicines. MSD Executive Vice President and Manufacturing Division President Dr. Dave Maraldo said that TheraNym will add capacity and capability to MSD's supply chain and enable compliant and reliable supply of products for patients.
Prior to the inauguration, Aurobindo's directors and MSD's senior leadership met Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to brief him about the project.
