Indian Automobile Retail Sales Experience Robust 25.6% Growth in February 2026

The domestic automobile retail sector in India demonstrated a powerful performance in February 2026, registering a significant year-on-year increase as consumer demand strengthened across nearly all vehicle categories. According to the latest data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), total retail sales for the month reached an impressive 24,09,362 units, a substantial rise from the 19,17,934 units recorded in February 2025.

Record-Breaking Performance Across Multiple Segments

This remarkable growth of 25.62 per cent, as reported by PTI, underscores a broad-based recovery and expansion in the automotive market. The dealers' body highlighted that the positive momentum was evident in five out of the six primary vehicle categories, which all achieved their highest-ever February retail volumes. This achievement signals robust consumer appetite and a notable improvement in overall market sentiment.

Two-Wheelers Lead with 25% Growth

Two-wheelers continued to dominate the retail landscape, maintaining their position as the largest contributor to total sales. The segment sold 17,00,505 units in February 2026, up from 13,60,155 units in the same month last year, marking a growth of approximately 25 per cent. Industry experts and dealers attribute this surge to several key factors:

  • Enhanced rural liquidity following favourable agricultural harvests
  • Improved affordability due to recent GST adjustments
  • Attractive promotional and financing schemes launched by manufacturers

Passenger Vehicles Show Strong 26% Increase

The passenger vehicle segment also posted healthy gains, with retail sales climbing to 3,94,768 units compared to 3,13,015 units in February 2025, reflecting a year-on-year increase of about 26 per cent. FADA's analysis reveals that demand remained vigorous across both urban and rural markets, though growth patterns varied:

  • Urban sales expanded by a solid 21 per cent
  • Rural markets experienced a more pronounced jump of 34 per cent

This rural demand surge has particularly benefited the sales of smaller, more economical cars, even as SUVs and utility vehicles continue to command a significant share of the overall market volume.

Cautiously Optimistic Outlook for the Coming Months

Looking forward, FADA maintains a cautiously optimistic view for the near term. The industry anticipates that festive season demand and year-end purchasing linked to the financial closing will help sustain retail momentum through March. However, the association suggests that the sector may gradually shift from a phase of rapid rebound to a more stable and steady growth trajectory in the upcoming months, indicating a maturing market cycle.
