Ethamukkala Check Lungis Reach Milestone as 1800th GI Application

The vibrant Ethamukkala Check Lungis from Andhra Pradesh have achieved a significant milestone. These traditional handwoven garments have become the 1,800th application filed with the Geographical Indication Registry in Chennai.

Weavers Cooperative Takes Initiative

The Ethamukkala Weavers Cooperative Production and Sales Society officially submitted the application. This organization represents the skilled artisans of Ethamukkala village in Prakasam district. They received expert assistance from Subhajit Saha, a GI practitioner and CEO of Resolute 4IP Services LLP.

Saha has extensive experience in this field. He has helped file more than fifty GI applications from both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Unique Characteristics of Ethamukkala Lungis

These lungis stand out for their distinctive check patterns and exceptional quality. They feature signature checks that form an integral part of the fabric itself.

The weaving process involves precise techniques. Artisans use 60x60 count combed cotton yarn. They weave the checks directly into the fabric through careful interlacement of warp and weft yarns.

This method creates several advantages:

  • Superior durability compared to printed designs
  • Consistent quality across all pieces
  • Long-lasting visual appeal that doesn't fade
  • Soft and lightweight texture for comfort

Generational Weaving Expertise

The check motifs result from specialized knowledge passed down through generations. Weavers in Ethamukkala have maintained these skills since 1975.

Their expertise includes:

  1. Careful selection of yarn materials
  2. Precise color balancing for vibrant patterns
  3. Meticulous alignment of check designs
  4. Traditional weaving techniques refined over decades

This combination of technical skill and cultural tradition gives Ethamukkala Check Lungis their recognizable character. It also ensures their superior quality compared to mass-produced alternatives.

Protection Against Imitation

Geographical indication protection will serve important purposes. It will guarantee that only authentic lungis from Ethamukkala can use this name in markets.

The GI tag will safeguard the product against misuse and imitation. It will also help preserve the reputation of these traditional textiles in both domestic and international markets.

This protection recognizes the unique heritage of Ethamukkala weaving. It acknowledges the generations of artisans who have maintained these traditional skills.
