Jharkhand Business Delegation Advocates for State Mahua Board to Enhance Rural Livelihoods
A delegation from the Federation of Jharkhand Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FJCCI) met with state Rural Development Minister Dipika Pandey Singh on Monday, strongly advocating for the creation of a state mahua board. This initiative is modeled on the successful makhana board in Bihar and aims to provide a structured boost to mahua cultivation and its associated industries.
Strategic Move to Organize Mahua Markets and Support Tribal Communities
The delegation emphasized that establishing a mahua board would catalyze the development of organized markets, directly benefiting those involved in mahua cultivation and related activities. Mahua, scientifically known as madhuca longifolia, holds sacred status among tribal communities due to its extensive medicinal properties. The flowers are abundantly available across Jharkhand's forested regions, serving as a vital source of sustenance for numerous forest dwellers.
FJCCI General Secretary Rohit Agarwal highlighted the potential economic impact, stating, "The formation of a state mahua board will significantly enhance mahua production and establish proper market linkages. This, in turn, will drive economic growth and job creation in rural areas. Providing a clear direction to the mahua-based economy is essential for boosting rural livelihoods. A dedicated board will facilitate ideation, strategic planning, and effective implementation in this sector."
Minister Singh has reportedly agreed in principle to the proposal, with commitments to further discussions and necessary actions.
Broader Rural Development Initiatives Proposed
Beyond the mahua board, the delegation outlined additional measures to stimulate rural economic development. They stressed the importance of encouraging industrial establishments in rural areas, citing limited land availability in urban centers. Proposals included attracting investors through concessional land rates and subsidies, which would not only accelerate the rural economy but also generate employment opportunities locally.
The delegation also called for the extension of MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) train services to all districts, improving mobility between rural and urban areas. Currently, MEMU trains operate routes from Ranchi to Lohardaga, Tori, and Asansol, enabling many rural residents to commute to cities and return by evening. Expanding this network to other districts would enhance accessibility and support economic integration.
These comprehensive proposals underscore a concerted effort to harness Jharkhand's natural resources and infrastructure for sustainable rural advancement, aligning with broader goals of economic diversification and community empowerment.
