Rs 887-Crore Mumbai Marina Project Approved to Boost Maritime Tourism
Govt Approves Rs 887-Crore World-Class Marina for Mumbai

The Union government has given its crucial approval for the development of a world-class marina in Mumbai Harbour, a landmark project estimated to cost Rs 887 crore. This initiative is designed to significantly enhance coastal shipping, maritime tourism, and waterfront development in the nation's financial capital.

What is the Viksit Bharat Mumbai Marina Project?

The newly approved 'Viksit Bharat Mumbai Marina' will be constructed across nearly 12 hectares of water area within Mumbai Harbour. Once completed, it will boast the capacity to berth as many as 424 yachts, each measuring up to 30 metres in length. This scale is poised to position it as one of the largest and most significant marina facilities in the entire country, firmly placing Mumbai on the international map for maritime tourism.

Investment, Cost, and Project Timeline

The total financial outlay for this ambitious project stands at Rs 887 crore. The investment will be a collaborative effort: the Mumbai Port Authority is set to invest approximately Rs 470 crore to develop the core marine infrastructure on an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) basis. The remaining Rs 417 crore will be funded by a private operator, who will be responsible for building the onshore facilities. The tender process is already underway, with the deadline for bid submissions scheduled for December 29, 2025.

Infrastructure and Expected Impact

The marine-side infrastructure will include essential components such as an approach trestle, a piled breakwater, service platforms, pontoons, and gangways to ensure smooth and safe yacht operations. On the landward side, the private developer will construct a comprehensive suite of facilities, including:

  • A modern marina terminal.
  • The Namo Bharat International Sailing School.
  • A maritime tourism development centre.
  • Hotel and clubhouse amenities.
  • A skill development centre.
  • Yacht repair and stacking infrastructure.

Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, emphasised that the marina will create world-class infrastructure, open the waterfront for public use, encourage private investment, and generate substantial new employment. The project is anticipated to create over 2,000 jobs in various sectors, including marina operations, hospitality, cruise services, and allied industries.

Alignment with National Maritime Goals

This project is a strategic component of the government's broader push for a blue economy. It is fully aligned with key national policy frameworks like the Maritime India Vision 2030, the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, the Sagarmala Programme, and the Cruise Bharat Mission. By doing so, it aims to strengthen Mumbai's pivotal role as a premier maritime and tourism hub for the nation.
