Gujarat Extends Solar Power Discount Hours for Industries in Surat Region
The state of Gujarat has implemented a significant policy change to encourage industrial adoption of solar power, extending the window for daytime electricity discounts by two additional hours. This strategic move aims to reduce reliance on more expensive evening and night energy sources while promoting sustainable energy practices.
Revised Discount Structure and Implementation
Previously, industrial consumers received a concession of 60 paise per unit for electricity used between 11 am and 3 pm. Under the newly revised arrangement, this discount period has been extended until 5 pm, providing industries with greater flexibility to schedule energy-intensive operations during daylight hours.
The benefit specifically applies to consumers equipped with smart meters, which enable precise hour-wise measurement of electricity consumption. This technological requirement ensures accurate tracking and implementation of the time-based discount system.
Expected Benefits and Industry Impact
Officials estimate that this policy shift could help industries in South Gujarat save approximately Rs 128 crore annually. The initiative is particularly designed to encourage manufacturing and production units to shift part of their operations to daytime hours when solar power generation reaches its peak.
"The move will improve load management for the power distribution system," explained an official from Dakshin Gujarat Vij Company Ltd. "Solar power supplied during the day is cheaper than electricity sourced later from conventional sources such as thermal plants. Increasing daytime consumption will help optimize use of lower-cost solar energy and reduce pressure on the grid after sunset."
The discom further clarified that the reduced cost of solar power generation has enabled them to pass these financial benefits directly to industrial consumers, creating a win-win situation for both energy providers and users.
Industry Response and Additional Policy Changes
Nikhil Madrasi, president of the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI), welcomed the policy change, noting that it would particularly benefit energy-intensive industries by reducing production costs and enhancing their competitive edge in domestic and international markets.
"The chamber had raised this issue with the government earlier, and we are pleased to see this positive development," Madrasi stated, highlighting the collaborative approach between industry representatives and policymakers.
In another significant change, the requirement for prepaid smart meters to access time-of-use discounts has been removed. All eligible consumers with standard smart meters can now avail of the extended discount benefit, ensuring broader accessibility across the industrial sector.
Broader Energy Policy Context
This initiative aligns with Gujarat's broader energy strategy that includes maintaining stable base tariff rates. The Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission has kept electricity tariff rates unchanged across all consumer categories, providing additional financial relief to industries already navigating various economic challenges.
The combined effect of extended discount hours and stable base rates creates a favorable environment for industrial growth while promoting sustainable energy consumption patterns throughout the state's manufacturing sector.
