Gurgaon-Delhi Connector Extension Proposed to Ease NH8 Congestion Near IGI Airport
Gurgaon-Delhi Connector Extension Proposed to Ease NH8 Congestion

Gurgaon is exploring a significant infrastructure proposal to tackle the worsening traffic congestion on NH8 and roads leading to Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport. Authorities are examining the possibility of extending a proposed Gurgaon-Delhi connector from Mahipalpur to Ghata Chowk on the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR). This initiative aims to provide an alternative route for commuters, especially those traveling from south Delhi to southern Gurgaon and towards Jaipur.

Meeting Highlights and Proposal Details

The proposal was discussed during a meeting on Tuesday, chaired by GMDA CEO PC Meena. Officials from Gurgaon Metro Rail Ltd, GMDA, NHAI's consultant, and other departments participated in discussions. The meeting focused on proposals submitted by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) to identify long-term traffic decongestion measures around IGI Airport and key Gurgaon corridors.

NHAI has already planned a 20-kilometer six-lane corridor from AIIMS in Delhi to Gurgaon-Faridabad Road via Mahipalpur. Officials confirmed that the connectivity up to Khushboo Chowk is part of this existing NHAI decongestion plan. GMDA has now suggested studying the extension of this corridor further to Ghata Chowk, creating a wider bypass-like movement corridor. This would allow through traffic from south Delhi to reach southern Gurgaon and Jaipur-bound routes without needing to enter NH8.

Feasibility and Next Steps

A separate meeting with senior NHAI officials will be held soon to deliberate on the proposal, possible alignments, and feasibility aspects. A senior GMDA official stated, “The proposed connectivity till Khushboo Chowk is already under consideration by NHAI. GMDA has now requested NHAI to examine whether it can be extended further till Ghata Chowk so that the alternative route could function like a ring-road connectivity for through traffic, reducing dependence on NH8 and easing pressure on key bottlenecks near the airport. For instance, traffic coming from south Delhi towards Jaipur can access Delhi-Mumbai Expressway through the proposed Greater Southern Peripheral Road or SPR.”

The core objective is to reduce dependency on the heavily congested NH8 stretch near IGI Airport by creating alternative movement corridors for through traffic. The official added, “The objective is to reduce pressure on NH8 and improve dispersal of traffic coming from the Delhi side towards Gurgaon and Jaipur-bound routes without forcing vehicles to enter city bottlenecks.”

Other Proposals Discussed

The meeting also covered other proposals, including elevated corridors and a grade separator at Rezang La Chowk connecting Dwarka Expressway and NH8. However, officials clarified that most suggestions remain at a preliminary conceptual stage and are yet to undergo detailed feasibility assessment.

DIAL presented several proposals, such as extending Dwarka Expressway till Mayapuri, extending Barapullah Road from INA till Mahipalpur, extending UER-II till Tughlakabad, and constructing a bypass at Rangpuri. However, GMDA officials noted that these projects fall outside the authority's jurisdiction.

Metro Network Overlap Considerations

Officials highlighted that the suggested alignment overlaps with existing and proposed metro networks. Metro agencies have been asked to study and examine whether such proposals are technically and practically feasible, as a new metro line passes through the stretch. Additionally, a planned metro corridor between Rezang La Chowk and Dwarka Sector 21 is under consideration.

This initiative reflects a coordinated effort among multiple agencies to address long-standing traffic issues in the region, with the potential to significantly improve commuter experience and reduce travel times.
