Major Infrastructure Boost: Gurgaon-Jhajjar Six-Lane Corridor and Farrukhnagar Bypass Announced
In a significant move to enhance regional connectivity, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has unveiled plans for a new six-lane corridor connecting Gurgaon and Jhajjar, along with a dedicated bypass for Farrukhnagar. This announcement was made during the state budget presentation, highlighting the government's commitment to improving transportation infrastructure in western Haryana.
Project Details and Scope
The proposed corridor spans 33 kilometers, extending from the Harsaru bypass on the Gurgaon–Pataudi Road at Wazirpur (NH 352W) to Jhajjar (NH 352). Currently, the stretch between Wazirpur and Farrukhnagar is a two-lane road that connects to the state highway at Farrukhnagar before merging with NH 352. Once completed, this six-lane corridor will provide seamless connectivity between Jhajjar and the Dwarka Expressway via NH 352 and NH 352W, offering an alternative route to reduce reliance on the congested Delhi-Jaipur highway.
NHAI's Role and DPR Preparation
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) initiated the process in November last year by inviting bids to appoint a consultant for preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR). An NHAI official stated, "The project is currently at an initial stage. We invited bids to engage a consultant for preparing the DPR and expect to finalise the agency this month." The DPR will comprehensively evaluate:
- Technical requirements and traffic projections
- Land acquisition needs and environmental impact
- Economic and financial viability of the project
- Final alignment and cost estimates
The exact alignment, including the starting point of the Farrukhnagar bypass, will be determined during the DPR stage after thorough feasibility studies and traffic analysis.
Related Infrastructure Developments
In a parallel development, NHAI is nearing completion of the 43-kilometer Gurgaon–Pataudi–Rewari (NH-352W) highway upgrade, with an estimated cost of Rs 900 crore. Officials confirmed that the project is partially open and aims for full completion by June. This corridor is expected to improve connectivity between Gurgaon, southern Haryana, and Rajasthan, while easing traffic on the Delhi–Jaipur Expressway. It will also serve as a faster alternative for industrial hubs like Manesar, Bilaspur, and Dharuhera, benefiting both commuters and freight traffic.
Historical Context and Challenges
The foundation stone for the Gurgaon–Pataudi–Rewari project was laid in July 2020 by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari. Originally scheduled for completion by December 2022, construction began in November 2021 with a revised two-year timeline. However, the project faced delays due to utility shifting issues and statutory approvals. Work was halted in September 2022 after the National Green Tribunal intervened following an appeal over forest clearance, with petitioners arguing that compensatory afforestation in Panchkula, nearly 300 kilometers away, was insufficient. In April 2024, the Supreme Court allowed NHAI to resume construction, directing that compensatory afforestation be undertaken within the city to mitigate environmental impact.
Future Connectivity Enhancements
Additionally, NHAI has begun girder launching at the Dwarka Expressway interchange for a unidirectional flyover, which will provide direct connectivity for vehicles traveling from Delhi towards Pataudi and Rewari. Once fully operational, these infrastructure projects are poised to transform regional mobility, reducing travel times and boosting economic activity in Haryana.
