Union Government Greenlights Final Survey for Key Railway Doubling Project
The Union government has granted approval for the crucial final location survey (FLS) for the proposed doubling of the Palakkad–Pollachi–Podanur railway line. This strategic initiative is designed to alleviate severe rail congestion between Palakkad and Coimbatore while significantly increasing train services along this heavily utilized corridor.
Enhanced Connectivity and Reduced Congestion
Currently, numerous vital trains connecting major cities such as Madurai, Thiruvananthapuram, Chennai, Dindigul, Tiruchendur, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, and Palakkad operate on the Pollachi–Coimbatore route. This makes it an indispensable railway link for the entire southern region. The approval was formally communicated by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw through a letter to Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L Murugan.
T Krishna Balaji, secretary of the Pollachi Train Passengers Welfare Association, elaborated on the development. He confirmed that the Centre has sanctioned the final survey to transform the Palakkad–Kollengode–Anaimalai Road–Pollachi–Kinathukadavu–Podanur railway line into a modern double-track corridor.
Infrastructure Upgrades and New Stations
As part of this ambitious project, the Anaimalai Road railway station is slated for an upgrade to a crossing station. Furthermore, there is a strong possibility of establishing brand new railway stations at Kovilpalayam and Chettipalayam, which would greatly enhance local accessibility and convenience for commuters.
Railway observers have pointed out a significant environmental and safety benefit. The existing Palakkad–Walayar–Madukkarai–Podanur route traverses through dense forest areas. The proposed new alignment via Pollachi is expected to drastically reduce dependence on this forest stretch, thereby helping to minimize tragic incidents of elephants being hit by trains, a persistent concern in the region.
Operational Efficiency and Economic Impact
Although the Pollachi route is approximately 40 kilometers longer than the current forest path, officials have assured that the increased speed of trains on the upgraded, double-track line will ensure no major changes to passenger train timings. This optimization balances distance with enhanced operational efficiency.
Balaji emphasized that the doubling project will unlock the potential for operating more passenger trains. Additionally, it will facilitate increased freight movement along the corridor. This dual benefit is poised to substantially strengthen rail connectivity between Kerala and the western districts of Tamil Nadu, acting as a catalyst for broader infrastructure development and stimulating regional economic activity.
Next Steps: From Survey to Implementation
Railway officials have clarified that the sanctioned final location survey will pave the way for a comprehensive technical assessment and detailed alignment planning for the entire project. With the survey now approved, detailed fieldwork is set to commence in the near future.
Once the survey phase is successfully completed, the project will progress to the critical stages of administrative approval and formal work sanction. This marks a significant step forward in modernizing a key transportation artery in South India.
