India Auto Retail Sales Surge 22% in June; EV Penetration Hits Record High
India Auto Retail Sales Up 22% in June; EVs at Record High

India's auto retail sales surged by 22% in June 2026 compared to the same month last year, driven by strong demand across segments, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) on Monday. Electric vehicle (EV) penetration also reached a record high, accounting for 8.5% of total retail sales, up from 6.2% in June 2025.

Record EV Penetration

EV sales in June stood at 1.2 lakh units, a 68% year-on-year increase, with two-wheelers leading the charge. FADA President Vinkesh Gulati said, "The EV ecosystem is maturing rapidly, with improved charging infrastructure and new model launches attracting buyers. We expect this trend to continue." Passenger vehicle EV penetration crossed 5% for the first time, while two-wheeler EV penetration hit 12%.

Segment-Wise Performance

Two-wheeler sales grew 24% to 18.5 lakh units, passenger vehicle sales rose 18% to 3.8 lakh units, and commercial vehicle sales increased 15% to 85,000 units. Tractor sales, however, remained flat due to uncertainty over monsoon rains. Three-wheeler sales jumped 30% to 45,000 units, driven by last-mile delivery demand.

Concerns Ahead

Despite the robust June performance, industry experts caution that July may see a slowdown. "Poor monsoon progress in key agricultural states and recent price hikes by automakers to offset rising input costs could dampen demand, especially in rural markets," Gulati added. The India Meteorological Department has reported a 12% rainfall deficit as of early July, raising concerns about kharif crop sowing and rural income.

Impact of Price Hikes

Several automakers, including Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, and Tata Motors, raised prices by 1-2% in June to comply with new emission norms and higher commodity costs. FADA data shows that inventory levels for passenger vehicles have risen to 35-40 days, above the ideal 30-day mark, indicating potential demand softening.

Outlook

FADA expects overall auto retail sales to grow 10-12% in the current fiscal year, but risks from monsoon variability and inflation persist. The government's continued focus on EV adoption through FAME III subsidies and state-level incentives is likely to sustain EV momentum. However, the industry awaits a clearer picture on monsoon revival in the coming weeks to gauge rural demand recovery.
