India Extends Customs Duty Waiver on Petrochemical Imports to July 15
India Extends Customs Duty Waiver on Petrochemical Imports

The Indian government on Tuesday extended the nil customs duty on imports of critical petrochemical products by 15 days, moving the deadline from June 30 to July 15, 2026. The extension aims to maintain supply stability amid ongoing disruptions caused by the West Asia crisis.

Scope of the Duty Waiver

Announced initially on April 2, 2026, the full customs duty exemption covers approximately 40 critical petrochemical products. The Finance Ministry described the measure as a 'temporary and targeted relief' to support industries reliant on petrochemical feedstock and intermediates. The exemption was originally set to lapse on June 30 but has now been extended through a notification issued on Tuesday.

Goods benefiting from the exemption include Methanol, Anhydrous ammonia, Toluene, Styrene, Dichloromethane (methylene chloride), Vinyl chloride monomer, Poly butadiene, Styrene butadiene, and Unsaturated polyester resins.

Impact on Downstream Sectors

The duty waiver is intended to benefit sectors such as plastics, packaging, textiles, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, automotive components, and other manufacturing segments. By reducing cost pressures on domestic industry, the government aims to safeguard supply stability and provide relief to consumers of final products.

According to the Finance Ministry's April statement, the measure was taken 'in light of the ongoing conflict in West Asia and the consequent disruptions in global supply chains.' The ministry emphasized that the exemption ensures continued availability of critical petrochemical inputs for the domestic industry.

Broader Concerns Amid West Asia Crisis

Disruption in shipping routes due to the West Asia war has raised concerns over imports of fertiliser, crude oil, and natural gas. India, a major importer of fertiliser and petroleum, relies heavily on stable supply chains for these commodities. The extension of the duty waiver is part of broader efforts to mitigate the economic impact of the crisis.

The government had earlier provided a full customs duty exemption on critical petrochemical products until June 30, which has now been extended to July 15 to ensure continuity.
