Black Friday Sales in India Jump 27% in 2024, Led by FMCG & Tier-III Cities
India's Black Friday Sales Grow 27%, Tier-III Cities Shine

India's Black Friday shopping event witnessed a powerful surge this year, with overall order volumes climbing by a significant 27% compared to the previous year, as per a new analysis. The data from e-commerce enablement platform Unicommerce reveals the event's solidifying mainstream status in the Indian retail calendar, driven by essential categories and remarkable participation from smaller towns.

Essential Categories Drive Record Growth

The analysis pinpoints the sectors that fueled this impressive growth. The Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) category, spearheaded by healthy food products, saw the most dramatic rise with an 83% year-on-year jump. Close behind, the beauty and personal care segment expanded by 77%, while the home category registered a 63% increase. This trend underscores a consumer shift towards spending on daily necessities, self-care, and household upgrades during the sale period.

While these categories showed the highest growth rates, fashion and accessories maintained their dominance in overall sales volume. As per the report, more than 3.4 million orders were placed in this segment during the Black Friday window.

The Rise of Tier-III India and Extended Sales

One of the most striking findings is the geographical distribution of orders. While Tier-I cities accounted for 40% of order volumes and Tier-II cities contributed 23%, it was Tier-III cities that emerged as a powerhouse, responsible for a significant 37% share. Shoppers from these smaller towns placed orders for more than 4.3 million items, a volume nearly equal to that of metropolitan areas.

Unicommerce highlighted that this surge from beyond the major cities points to the rapid expansion of digital adoption, improved logistics networks, and the growing purchasing power of India's emerging online consumer base. Furthermore, the event itself has evolved from a short promotional burst into a week-long high-engagement sale window. Retailers started offers earlier to cater to shoppers who remained active throughout the week, aiding in better product discovery and fulfillment planning.

Cyber Week Becomes a New Retail Norm

The Black Friday phenomenon is now seamlessly blending with Cyber Monday, the online-focused shopping day that follows it. Together, these events are forming a broader 'Cyber Week' in India, which is increasingly shaping the promotional strategies of both brands and online marketplaces. This extended period reflects the deepening integration of global shopping trends into the Indian consumer psyche and the digital marketplace's adaptability.

The findings from Unicommerce's order and inventory management platform, Uniware, confirm that the shift towards digital shopping ahead of the holiday season remains robust. What began as a predominantly US retail tradition is now a firmly established and growing pillar of India's e-commerce landscape.
