India's Industrial Output Up 4.9% in April 2026

India's industrial production expanded by 4.9 per cent in April 2026, propelled by robust growth in the manufacturing sector, as per the first release of the revised Index of Industrial Production (IIP) series with the base year 2022-23. The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) unveiled the new IIP series on Monday, replacing the earlier 2011-12 base year and broadening the index's coverage to more accurately represent the current economic structure.

IIP Quick Estimate and Sectoral Performance

The Quick Estimate of IIP stood at 118.9 in April 2026, compared to 113.1 in April 2025, reflecting a growth rate of 4.9 per cent. Manufacturing output rose by 6.2 per cent during the month. The Electricity & Gas Supply segment recorded a 4.9 per cent increase, while Water Supply, Sewerage & Waste Management expanded by 6.6 per cent. In contrast, Mining & Quarrying witnessed a contraction of 5.1 per cent.

Manufacturing Sector Highlights

Within manufacturing, 17 out of 23 industry groups posted positive growth. Key contributors included the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers, which grew by 12.7 per cent; manufacture of electrical equipment, up 19.2 per cent; and manufacture of machinery and equipment, rising 12.9 per cent.

Use-Based Classification Trends

Data based on use-based classification indicated strong momentum in investment-linked sectors. Capital Goods output surged by 16 per cent in April, while Intermediate Goods grew by 7.7 per cent and Infrastructure/Construction Goods rose by 7.1 per cent. Consumer Durables and Consumer Non-Durables recorded growth rates of 4.3 per cent and 2.8 per cent, respectively.

Revised IIP Series Features

The revised series introduces broader industrial coverage, including Gas Supply and Water Supply, Sewerage & Waste Management activities. The item basket has been expanded to 463 item groups from 407 in the previous series. Additionally, the new framework provides separate indices for renewable and non-renewable electricity generation, along with detailed classifications within mining activities.

MoSPI stated that the revised series aims to offer a more representative and comprehensive measure of industrial activity, aligned with evolving production patterns and international best practices. The IIP data for May 2026 is scheduled for release on June 29.
