Industrial Water Demand in Indore Region Climbs to 55 Million Litres Per Day
Water demand in Pithampur, the largest industrial belt in Madhya Pradesh, along with other industrial zones in the Indore region, has surged by approximately 5 million litres per day (MLD). The total requirement has now escalated to 55 MLD, marking a significant increase driven by fresh demand from newly established industrial clusters.
New Industrial Clusters Fuel the Rise in Water Consumption
The rise in water demand is largely attributed to the operational commencement and advanced commissioning stages of units in new industrial areas, including the Mohana industrial area and the Smart Industrial Township in Sector 7. These developments have contributed substantially to the heightened consumption levels, reflecting the region's ongoing industrial expansion.
Madhya Pradesh Industrial Development Corporation (MPIDC) executive director Himanshu Prajapati emphasized that the increase underscores the industrial growth in the region. "The additional demand is emerging from new industrial zones such as Mohana and Sector 7. We are committed to ensuring that water supply is maintained according to requirements across all industrial belts," he stated.
Seasonal Variations and Supply Challenges
MPIDC is responsible for supplying water to industries across notified industrial areas in the region. The total demand during summer months reaches about 55 MLD, compared to around 45 MLD in winter, highlighting seasonal fluctuations that impact resource management.
Industry representatives have pointed out that the rise in demand is also linked to expansion activities in Pithampur, where new units are adding to consumption levels. Gautam Kothari of Pithampur Audyogik Sangathan explained, "With new units being established in areas like Sector 7 and Mohana, water demand has increased significantly. During peak summer, supply tends to drop in several pockets, forcing industries to rely on tanker water to maintain operations. Continuous and assured supply is critical for sustaining production cycles."
Current Supply Sources and Infrastructure Development
Officials have indicated that the current water requirement is being met through sources from the Narmada Valley Development Authority (NVDA). However, supply from the Sanjay water reservoir and Karam dam remains limited during the season, posing challenges for consistent water availability.
To address these issues and ensure uninterrupted supply, MPIDC is undertaking several infrastructure projects. These include:
- Construction of new ground storage reservoirs
- Development of an elevated service reservoir
- Installation of a dedicated feeder for reliable power supply to water systems
These initiatives aim to enhance the resilience of water supply networks and support the growing industrial demands in the Indore region, ensuring that production activities can proceed without disruption.
