Noida International Airport in Jewar Aims to Be India's First Green Airport
Lucknow is witnessing a groundbreaking development in aviation. The Noida International Airport in Jewar is poised to transform air travel in India. This airport will not only serve as a major connectivity hub but also set a new standard for environmental responsibility.
Net-Zero Concept and IGBC Certification
The airport is being developed on a net-zero concept in partnership with the Zurich Airport Group. This collaboration has already yielded a significant achievement. Jewar airport has earned the distinction of being India's first IGBC-certified green campus airport.
Shailendra Kumar Bhatia, the ACEO of YEIDA, provided details on the sustainable design. The terminal building is specifically engineered to minimize energy, water, and waste consumption. Every aspect of the construction prioritizes eco-friendly practices.
Electric Vehicle Infrastructure and Renewable Energy
A key feature of the green initiative is the focus on electric mobility. About twenty percent of the parking area will be equipped with fast and standard charging stations for electric vehicles. All airside operational vehicles will operate fully on electricity.
Multiple charging points will be installed across the airport premises to support this electric fleet. In alignment with the state's green energy vision, a massive solar farm is under development. This solar farm spans over eighty-three acres.
It will have a capacity of 51,966 megawatt-hours. This ensures a large-scale supply of renewable energy to power the airport's operations.
Sustainable Water and Waste Management
Water conservation is another critical component of the sustainability plan. Two rainwater harvesting ponds will be constructed to provide sustainable water sources for the airport. These ponds will help reduce dependency on external water supplies.
An RNG plant is also in the planning stages. This Renewable Natural Gas plant will power airport vehicles and DG sets with green fuel. A comprehensive waste management system will be implemented to promote segregation, recycling, and scientific treatment of waste.
Environmental Monitoring and Safety
To ensure ongoing environmental safety, the airport will implement a rigorous monitoring plan. This plan will track air, water, soil, waste, and sewage standards on a monthly basis. Regular checks will help maintain compliance with environmental regulations.
The Noida International Airport in Jewar represents a bold step forward. It combines modern aviation infrastructure with a strong commitment to sustainability. This project could serve as a model for future airports across the country.
