Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) has awarded station works worth Rs 100 crore to Godrej and Boyce Manufacturing Company Ltd to accelerate the delayed Pink Line project connecting Kakkanad and Infopark. The contractor has been given a one-year deadline to complete the works.
Contract Details
According to a Metro official, the architectural, finishing, plumbing and interior works at 10 elevated Metro stations on the upcoming corridor are valued at Rs 100.3 crore, split into two contract packages. Godrej & Boyce emerged as the lowest bidder for both packages, beating competitor Crescent Contractors Pvt Ltd.
The first package, valued at Rs 55.20 crore, covers five elevated stations — Civil Station Junction, Cochin SEZ, Chittethukara, Kinfra Park and Infopark. The contractor is required to complete all block work, plumbing and interior works at these locations to make them ready-to-use.
The second package covers the remaining five stations — Palarivattom Junction, Alinchuvadu, Chembumukku, Vazhakkala and Padamugal. The scope of work matches the first package, with a matching 360-day timeline to deliver the finished station infrastructure.
Project Timeline and Delays
The Pink Line has been delayed by over one-and-half years. KMRL is now aiming to complete civil works of the 10.58-km elevated corridor by June next year, with final testing, system integration and official commissioning fixed for August 2027.
Design and Features
The corridor has been conceptualized as a tribute to women. Every station is being designed with a strong emphasis on safety, visibility, accessibility and comfort. The stations will feature open lines of sight, elimination of blind spots, well-lit concourses, universally accessible spaces, dedicated mothers’ lounges and nursing rooms, curvilinear roof structures and expansive protective canopies. Harsh right angles and rigid structural elements have been minimized in favour of curved pathways, organically merging columns, ergonomic seating and passenger spaces.
Significance of Metro Phase 2
Metro Phase 2 will run from JLN Stadium to Kakkanad’s Infopark. The new line is designed to bridge the gap between Kochi’s city center and its rapidly expanding IT hub. Once operational, the corridor will provide a faster, traffic-free alternative for thousands of daily commuters, tech professionals and citizens traveling to the IT parks, business centres and government offices in Kakkanad.
