Kodagu Chamber Advocates for Railway Connectivity to Boost Economy
The Kodagu District Chamber of Commerce and Industry Association (KDCCI) has made a strong appeal to the government, emphasizing the critical need for railway connectivity to Kodagu district. According to the chamber, this infrastructure project is vital for stimulating industrial expansion and enhancing tourism in the region.
Addressing Transportation Challenges for Key Commodities
Speaking at a one-day awareness program for industrialists held at Kannika Hall in Kushalnagar, KDCCI president BR Nagendra Prasad highlighted the severe impact of the absence of a railway line. He pointed out that the movement of essential commodities, particularly coffee—the district's primary agricultural product—is being hampered.
Prasad explained, "Lakhs of tonnes of coffee are exported through the port in Mangaluru, but currently, we rely entirely on truck services for transportation. During the monsoon season, the main road used for coffee transport is closed for two to three months, causing significant disruptions."
He argued that establishing a railway line would not only alleviate this burden but also substantially reduce logistics costs for local entrepreneurs, making their operations more efficient and competitive.
Call for Government Action and Support
Prasad urged the Karnataka Small Scale Industries Association (KASSIA) to apply pressure on the Union government to prioritize the railway project for Kodagu. He stressed that timely implementation is crucial for the district's economic development.
At the same event, BK Sudeep Kumar, president of the Kodagu District Small Industries Association, addressed the gathering. He emphasized the importance of entrepreneurs becoming well-acquainted with various government grants, subsidies, and support schemes available for setting up industries.
Kumar also advised maintaining clean and transparent business transactions to foster strong relationships with banking institutions, which is essential for securing financial support and growth.

The awareness program saw the presence of key officials, including Hanumantharaya, joint director of the District Industrial Centre, and Ninganna S Biradara, vice-president of KASSIA. Their participation underscored the collaborative effort needed to address infrastructure gaps.
