Kudumbashree Inaugurates 'Sulabham' Cafe in Thiruvananthapuram to Foster Urban Employment
In a significant move to enhance urban livelihoods, Kudumbashree launched the 'Sulabham' cafe-cum-restaurant in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday. This initiative is designed to provide quality food at affordable prices while generating sustainable income opportunities for its members. The restaurant, strategically located near the KSRTC City Unit in East Fort, was officially inaugurated by LSG Minister M B Rajesh, marking a new chapter in the organization's urban development efforts.
Expanding Access to Nutritious Meals and Economic Empowerment
The 'Sulabham' cafe aims to serve as a community hub, accommodating up to 50 patrons at a time. It offers a vegetarian meal for just Rs 50, making it an accessible dining option for residents and commuters alike. In addition to meals, the cafe provides tea, coffee, snacks, and parcel services, ensuring convenience for customers on the go. Operating hours are from 6 am to 6 pm, catering to early risers and daytime visitors.
This project is a key component of the Kudumbashree Urban Initiative, which focuses on creating self-employment avenues in urban areas. By establishing such cafes, Kudumbashree not only addresses food security but also empowers women and other members through skill development and entrepreneurship. The success of this model in Thiruvananthapuram has prompted plans to replicate similar projects across Kerala, potentially transforming urban economies statewide.
Key features of the 'Sulabham' cafe include:
- Affordable pricing with meals starting at Rs 50.
- A capacity to serve 50 customers simultaneously.
- Extended operating hours from early morning to evening.
