Lemon Prices Skyrocket in Andhra Pradesh as Summer Intensifies
In a dramatic market shift, lemon prices across various parts of Andhra Pradesh have surged by nearly 70% as the summer season approaches. This sharp increase is causing significant concern among consumers while benefiting farmers in key production regions.
Current Market Rates and Consumer Impact
Consumers are currently paying anywhere between Rs 120 and Rs 140 per kilogram for lemons, with prices varying based on size and color. This represents a substantial jump from just weeks ago when lemons were fetching only Rs 60-70 per kilogram. According to Vizag trader M Bangaramma, this marks an almost 90% increase in retail prices since early February.
The price surge is squeezing household budgets across the state. Many consumers rely on lemons as an affordable source of Vitamin C and as a key ingredient in traditional summer refreshments like lemon water mixed with mint, which helps combat dehydration during the hot season.
Weather Conditions Driving Demand
The price escalation coincides with rising temperatures across Andhra Pradesh. Maximum temperatures in several districts have been hovering between 33°C and 36°C over recent days, which is 1 to 2 degrees above normal seasonal levels. This heatwave has left coastal residents particularly uncomfortable during afternoon hours.
"Rising temperatures have driven demand sharply upward over the past fortnight," explained trader M Bangaramma. The increased need for cooling beverages and Vitamin C-rich foods during hot weather has created unprecedented demand for lemons in local markets.
Production Centers and Supply Challenges
Farmers in Guntur and neighboring regions, which constitute Andhra Pradesh's largest lemon production areas, are experiencing unexpected windfalls from the soaring prices. However, traders predict that supplies from these key regions will decrease during peak summer months, potentially worsening the supply situation.
The current market dynamics reveal a widening gap between demand and available supply. With consumer demand significantly outstripping market arrivals, the price squeeze is expected to intensify in the coming weeks.
Future Market Outlook
Traders across the state are warning consumers to brace for further price hikes in the coming weeks. As supplies from Guntur and Godavari regions diminish during the hottest summer months, the demand-supply imbalance is likely to become more pronounced.
Despite the price increases, lemons remain the most accessible citrus fruit in local markets throughout Andhra Pradesh. Their nutritional value and traditional use in summer beverages continue to make them indispensable for many households, even as costs rise dramatically.
The situation highlights how seasonal weather patterns can significantly impact agricultural markets and consumer prices, creating both opportunities for producers and challenges for consumers during extreme weather conditions.
