Mahagenco-NTPC Joint Venture Successfully Acquires Sinnar Thermal Power Limited
In a significant development for Maharashtra's energy sector, the Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Limited (Mahagenco) and Nashik Thermal Power Corporation, a subsidiary of NTPC Limited, have jointly completed the acquisition process of Sinnar Thermal Power Limited (STPL). This strategic move, finalized after all payments were made, clears the path for the revival of the long-stalled 1,350 MW coal-based thermal power project located in Sinnar, Nashik district.
Acquisition Through NCLT and Revival Plan
The consortium successfully bid for control of the project through the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), submitting a comprehensive plan to revive the facility. This initiative comes at a critical time when the region's existing power generation infrastructure has not only aged but also exceeded its life expectancy, creating an urgent need to meet growing electricity demands.
Atul Sonje, Chief Executive Officer of Sinnar Thermal Power Limited, elaborated on the details: "This acquisition has been executed through a 50:50 joint venture between Mahagenco and NTPC. Our immediate target is to operationalize the first two units, each with a capacity of 270 MW, within approximately eight months. The remaining three units are scheduled to be commissioned over the next three years. This expansion will add reliable base-load capacity to Maharashtra's power system, enhancing grid stability and reducing dependency on older plants."
Boosting Maharashtra's Power Capacity
With this acquisition, Mahagenco's thermal power generation capacity is set to increase significantly from 10,200 MW to 11,550 MW. When combined with its existing gas, solar, and hydroelectric projects, Mahagenco's total installed capacity will surpass 15 GW. This milestone marks a substantial step forward in strengthening Maharashtra's energy security, ensuring a more robust and diversified power supply to support industrial and residential needs across the state.
Economic and Employment Benefits
The revival of STPL is expected to generate substantial economic benefits for the Nashik region. Sonje highlighted a key advantage of the STPL revival: "The most important benefit of STPL functioning is that the region, which currently relies on three 210 MW generation units at the Nashik Thermal Power Station installed in the 1970s, will gain efficient and cleaner power backup arrangements. This enhancement is crucial well before events like the Simhastha Kumbh Mela, ensuring reliable electricity supply during high-demand periods and reducing the risk of outages."
