Maharashtra Extends Restaurant, Bar Timings to 5 AM for Christmas & New Year's Eve
Maharashtra allows 5 am closing for restaurants on festive nights

The Maharashtra government has given a special nod to the hospitality sector, allowing restaurants, restobars, and pubs to extend their operating hours until 5 am on three key festive nights. This relaxation applies to Christmas Eve (December 24), Christmas Day (December 25), and New Year's Eve (December 31).

Industry Request Prompted Government Decision

The move came after the Hotel and Restaurant Association (Western India) (HRAWI) made a formal representation to the state government and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis earlier on Wednesday. The association had specifically sought an extension of operational timings for establishments serving alcohol on these dates to cater to the festive rush.

Jimmy Shaw, President of HRAWI, expressed gratitude for the government's prompt action. He stated that the year-end period is crucial for the tourism and hospitality business. The extended hours, he noted, follow a established precedent and will help venues plan better and manage crowds more effectively.

Understanding the 24x7 Policy and Its Exceptions

This special permission comes against the backdrop of a broader state policy. As per a Maharashtra government circular dated October 1, 2025, hotels and restaurants across the state are generally permitted to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

However, there is a significant exception to this rule. Establishments that hold excise licenses for serving liquor are excluded from this all-day operation provision under the standard policy. Therefore, the government's latest order provides a targeted relaxation specifically for these venues on the three festive nights.

Boost for Tourism and Employment

Welcoming the decision, HRAWI President Jimmy Shaw highlighted multiple benefits. He said that the extended timings would allow establishments to better meet guest expectations during the celebrations. Furthermore, it would lead to smoother crowd management at closing time.

Shaw also pointed out that the move would create additional employment opportunities during the festive season. He emphasized that such initiatives enhance Maharashtra's reputation as a vibrant, safe, and globally attractive destination for tourists. The association assured the government of strict compliance with all safety, security, and regulatory norms by its member establishments.

This decision is seen as a significant boost for the hospitality industry in Mumbai and across Maharashtra, which eagerly anticipates a busy and profitable holiday season.
