Maharashtra Budget Greenlights Major Elevated Corridor Project for Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar
In a significant infrastructure development move, the Maharashtra state budget has cleared a proposal for a mega elevated corridor that will connect Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar airport with the Waluj MIDC industrial area. The approval, granted on Friday, represents a crucial step forward for the city's transportation network, though specific funding allocations have not yet been earmarked for the project.
Two-Phase Execution for 15-Kilometer Stretch
The proposed corridor spans nearly 15 kilometers and is planned to be executed in two distinct phases. This ambitious project is specifically designed to address the chronic traffic congestion along Jalna Road, which currently accounts for approximately 40% of all vehicle movement within the city. Previous transportation studies have indicated that over five lakh vehicles travel on this critical artery daily, highlighting the urgent need for improved infrastructure.
The elevated corridor was identified as one of three major routes in the comprehensive mobility plan prepared by the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited several years ago. A substantial portion of the planned structure will run directly above Jalna Road, providing dedicated space for traffic flow while minimizing disruption to existing ground-level transportation.
Analysts and Business Community Welcome Development
Transportation strategist and independent analyst Nikhil Bhalerao emphasized that an elevated corridor connecting the Waluj and Shendra industrial hubs via Jalna Road has been a long-standing demand from the business community and residents alike. "The state budget includes approval for a corridor from the airport to Waluj MIDC, though it currently leaves out the remaining stretch extending to Shendra," Bhalerao noted. "Nevertheless, this represents a major infrastructure push for Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, provided that adequate funding follows promptly for its actual implementation."
Bhalerao further advocated for developing the proposed corridor as a Mass Rapid Transit system rather than just a conventional road project. "The corridor should be developed as a comprehensive mass rapid transit system," he insisted. "It must integrate efficient public transport options along with dedicated space for regular vehicular traffic to maximize its effectiveness and accessibility for all citizens."
Commercial Benefits and Implementation Timeline
Laxminarayan Rathi, vice-president of the local merchants' association, expressed strong support for the project, highlighting its potential benefits for commercial establishments along Jalna Road. "Traffic snarls and congestion have been significantly hurting businesses along this important stretch for years," Rathi explained. "This infrastructure development should materialize at the earliest possible opportunity to alleviate these challenges and boost economic activity in the area."
While the budget approval marks a critical milestone, stakeholders emphasize that timely funding allocation and efficient project execution will be essential for realizing the corridor's full potential. The development is expected to not only improve traffic flow but also enhance connectivity between key industrial zones and transportation hubs, potentially stimulating economic growth across the region.
