Karnataka Infrastructure Development Minister M B Patil has urged the Indian Railways to develop quadruple railway lines connecting Bengaluru to Tumakuru, Mysuru, Hindupur via Gauribidanur, and Kolar. The proposal, supported by Union Minister of State for Railways V Somanna, aims to improve connectivity for Mangaluru and cities within 100 km of Bengaluru.
Details of the Quadruple Line Proposal
During a recent review meeting, Patil emphasized the need for quadruple lines to ease congestion on existing routes and reduce travel time. The proposed lines would cover key corridors: Bengaluru-Tumakuru, Bengaluru-Mysuru, Bengaluru-Hindupur via Gauribidanur, and Bengaluru-Kolar. These routes currently handle heavy freight and passenger traffic, leading to delays and capacity constraints.
According to Somanna, the quadrupling project is part of a broader plan to modernize Karnataka's rail network. He stated, "This initiative will significantly boost economic growth by enhancing freight movement and passenger convenience." The project is expected to cost several thousand crore rupees, with funding to be shared between the state and central governments.
Impact on Mangaluru and Surrounding Cities
The quadruple lines will directly benefit Mangaluru, a major port city, by improving connectivity to Bengaluru and other industrial hubs. Cities within 100 km of Bengaluru, including Tumakuru, Mysuru, Hindupur, and Kolar, will also see enhanced rail services. This is expected to reduce travel time by up to 30% and increase freight capacity by 40%.

The Karnataka government has requested the Railways to conduct a detailed feasibility study and prepare a project report within six months. Patil assured that the state will provide necessary land and support for the project. Somanna indicated that the Railways will prioritize the quadrupling work, with construction expected to begin in 2027 and completion targeted by 2030.
