Nagpur Metro Enhances Commuter Experience with Automated Vending Kiosks

Commuters using the Nagpur MahaMetro can now enjoy greater convenience with the introduction of automated vending kiosks at select stations. Seven such kiosks are currently operational across the Phase 1 network, offering quick snacks and beverages on the go. Metro officials have confirmed that a tender process is actively underway for an additional 16 kiosks, significantly expanding this amenity.

Operational Kiosks and Tender Details

The seven functional vending kiosks have been strategically installed at high-traffic stations: Shankar Nagar, Sitabuldi, Prajapati Nagar, Nagpur Railway Station, Khapri, Lokmanya Nagar, and Automotive Square. These units were allocated to Oam Industries (India) Pvt Ltd under a three-year contract. The operational model involves an advance licence fee for six months, with the private agency responsible for installation, stocking, and ongoing maintenance.

Originally, 11 vending machines were proposed across identified stations. Out of these, seven are now installed, while the remaining four are included in a fresh tender process. Furthermore, MahaMetro has identified 12 additional spaces at other stations, bringing the total number of kiosks currently under tender to 16. The last date for bid submissions for these 16 kiosks is set for early March.

Revenue Generation and Expansion Plans

Officials clarified that the kiosks are being allotted under Metro's property development model. Similar to leased shops and commercial spaces at stations, these vending machine locations are provided on a licence basis, generating non-fare box revenue for the corporation. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to strengthen passenger amenities while enhancing revenue streams through structured commercial utilisation of station spaces.

A senior MahaMetro official outlined the long-term vision, stating that the goal is to have at least one vending machine at every station. In Phase 1, the Nagpur Metro comprises 38 stations. With the current tender, 23 stations are expected to feature vending kiosks once the process is finalised. The remaining stations will be covered in subsequent phases.

Future Considerations and Passenger Feedback

Officials indicated that additional locations may be considered based on commuter footfall and demand. "Based on passenger feedback and usage patterns, vending machine locations can be modified or expanded. The aim is to ensure convenience while optimising space utilisation," a senior official explained. This adaptive approach ensures that the service evolves to meet the needs of daily commuters effectively.

MahaMetro's initiative not only addresses the immediate need for quick refreshments but also aligns with modern urban transit trends, where seamless passenger experience is paramount. By integrating these automated solutions, Nagpur Metro is setting a precedent for other Indian metro systems to follow, blending operational efficiency with enhanced customer service.
