NTPC Simhadri Thermal Plant Marks Ninth Year of 100% Ash Utilisation
The 2,000 MW Simhadri super thermal power project, operated by NTPC in Parawada, Anakapalle district of Andhra Pradesh, has achieved a remarkable milestone by exceeding 100% ash utilisation for the ninth consecutive year since 2017-2018. This achievement highlights the plant's unwavering commitment to sustainable power generation and efficient resource management, setting a benchmark in the thermal energy sector.
Power Generation and Operational Performance
As India's first coastal-based thermal power station, NTPC Simhadri has generated an impressive 11,136 million units (MU) of electricity up to March 27 in the financial year 2025-26. The plant operated at a plant load factor (PLF) of 64.27%, demonstrating robust efficiency. Additionally, solar generation contributed 39.362 MUs during this period, showcasing the facility's integration of renewable energy sources.
Simhadri remains a critical power supplier to southern Indian states, including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala. Officials emphasize that its steady generation has been instrumental in ensuring grid stability amidst rising electricity demands across the region.
State Allocations and Coal Sourcing
Ayaskanta Jena, Unit Head of NTPC Simhadri, detailed the plant's vital role in meeting regional power needs. Specifically, 684 MW is allocated to Andhra Pradesh and 793 MW to Telangana. Coal for the plant is sourced sustainably from Mahanadi Coal Fields Ltd in Odisha and transported via the East Coast Railway network, ensuring a reliable fuel supply chain.
Environmental and Technological Initiatives
NTPC Simhadri has invested significantly in emission control technologies. All four units of Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) have been commissioned, effectively removing sulfur dioxide from exhaust gases to reduce air pollution. In terms of water conservation, over 85% of the plant's water requirements are met using seawater, minimizing freshwater usage.
Technological advancements include the successful completion of drone-based corrosion mapping repairs on stage-1 of the Natural Draft Cooling Tower, enhancing maintenance efficiency and safety. These efforts underscore the plant's focus on innovation and environmental stewardship.
Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility
Under the 'Green Visakha' initiative, afforestation efforts have led to the planting of lakhs of saplings across Visakhapatnam and Anakapalle districts, with the plant premises declared plastic-free. In FY 2025-26 alone, nearly 40,000 saplings were planted, achieving a 95% success rate.
The plant's commitment to sustainability has been recognized with prestigious awards such as the Greentech Environment Award and the Golden Peacock Award for CSR Excellence. CSR initiatives focus on key areas including healthcare, education, skill development, water and sanitation, women empowerment, and community infrastructure, benefiting local populations.
Overall, NTPC Simhadri's achievements in ash utilisation, power generation, and environmental management position it as a leader in sustainable thermal energy production in India.
