The Pithampur Audhyogik Sangathan has demanded a high-level investigation into a recent fire at a hazardous waste management unit that spread to four neighboring industries. The industry body emphasized the need for a detailed assessment and stronger safeguards to prevent recurrence in one of Madhya Pradesh's largest industrial belts.
Scale of Industrial Activity
Pithampur houses over 1,200 industrial units and employs more than one lakh workers, making safety and compliance critical for sustaining operations. Industry representatives said the incident has highlighted the need to review existing monitoring and enforcement mechanisms, particularly in units handling hazardous materials.
Call for Investigation
"A thorough investigation is important to identify any gaps and ensure such incidents are not repeated. There is also a need to strengthen safety systems and coordination among agencies," said Gautam Kothari, president of the association.
The association said it had previously raised concerns regarding handling and storage practices at some units and emphasized the importance of timely action on such inputs. It also pointed to the need for improved post-incident response, including quicker communication and coordinated action among departments.
Health and Environmental Concerns
Units operating nearby reported temporary discomfort among workers, including irritation and breathing issues, during and after the fire. Industry members said continued monitoring will be necessary to assess any lingering impact and ensure workplace safety. Firms also highlighted the importance of evaluating potential environmental effects, particularly on water and air quality. They have suggested periodic checks to rule out any long-term risks.

The incident has also led to disruptions for some units, affecting operations and expansion timelines. Industry leaders said the focus should now be on strengthening safety protocols, improving emergency preparedness, and ensuring consistent compliance across the industrial belt, while maintaining the region's attractiveness for investment.
