India's electricity consumption registered a slight decline in November 2024, reflecting changing seasonal patterns and reduced reliance on energy-intensive appliances. Official data reveals a nuanced picture of the nation's power demand as it transitions from summer to winter.
November Sees Marginal Dip in Power Usage
The total power consumed across the country in November stood at 123.4 billion units (BU). This marks a minor decrease of 0.31 per cent compared to the 123.79 BU recorded in the same month the previous year. Industry analysts point directly to the frugal use of air conditioners and coolers as the primary reason for this drop.
This follows a more significant year-on-year contraction of 5.8 per cent witnessed in October 2024, when consumption was 131.07 BU. The preceding month of September had told a different story, with usage climbing to 145.66 BU from 140.61 BU in September 2023.
Weather Patterns Dictate Demand Trends
Experts explain that unseasonal rainfall across various regions in October drastically cut the need for cooling. By November, with the proper onset of winter in most parts, the usage of these appliances fell to nearly zero. Interestingly, while the winter season has commenced, the widespread use of heating appliances like geysers and room heaters was not yet necessary for most consumers during November, keeping a lid on consumption.
Peak Power Demand Tells a Different Story
While overall energy consumption dipped, the story of peak power demand—the highest supply met in a day—diverged. In November 2024, the peak demand met rose to 215.54 Gigawatts (GW), surpassing the 207.44 GW recorded in November of the previous year.
This peak remains below the record levels seen during the intense summer months. The all-time high was reached in May 2024, touching approximately 250 GW. The previous record of 243.27 GW was set in September 2023. This past summer, the highest peak demand was 242.77 GW in June 2024.
Looking ahead, government estimates project that peak power demand could soar to 277 GW during the summer of 2025, indicating significant planning and infrastructure preparedness will be required.
Steady Demand Expected in Coming Months
Energy sector observers predict that power consumption and demand will stabilize from December onwards. As temperatures fall further across northern and central India, the use of heating appliances is expected to rise, creating a more consistent and steady demand pattern for the grid. This seasonal shift is a key factor in annual energy planning for utilities and policymakers across the country.
