Punjab Wheat Procurement to Commence on April 1 with 132 LMT Target and Rs 2,585 MSP
Wheat procurement in Punjab is poised to begin from April 1, with the state setting an ambitious target of 132 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) and a minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 2,585 per quintal. This critical decision emerged from a high-level meeting of a Punjab group of ministers (GoM) established to oversee and streamline procurement-related preparations.
Key Ministers Overseeing Procurement Operations
The GoM comprises several key ministers, including Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian, Civil Supplies Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak, Water Resources Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal, and Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar. Their collective efforts are focused on ensuring a smooth and efficient procurement process for the upcoming wheat season.
Addressing Storage Shortages and Logistics Challenges
During the meeting, significant concerns were raised regarding a potential shortage of storage facilities for the grains. Ministers were informed that the Food Corporation of India (FCI) has been moving out 5 LMT of wheat and 5 LMT of rice every month since August 2025. However, to create adequate space for the new crop, there is an urgent need to transport at least 15 LMT of wheat each month. The ministers emphasized that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is actively raising this critical issue with the central government to secure necessary support and resources.
Innovative Storage Solutions and Procurement Preparations
To ensure the safe and secure storage of wheat, the food and civil supplies department is exploring various innovative solutions. These include constructing plinths and utilizing empty spaces in rice mills. Additionally, regular reviews of procurement arrangements are being conducted with district administrations to address any logistical or operational hurdles proactively.
Authorities are also coordinating closely with district managers of the FCI to develop comprehensive contingency plans and alternate arrangements. In terms of material readiness, instructions have been issued for 3,91,320 plastic crates, of which 2,31,055 have already been received. The remaining crates are expected to arrive by March. Furthermore, orders have been placed for 6,75,000 wooden crates, and the necessary LPED covers required for safely storing wheat are fully available and in stock.
Commission Rate Hike Demand from Arhtiyas
Another important issue brought to the attention of the ministers was the demand from arhtiyas (commission agents) to increase their rates of commission from Rs 45 per quintal to Rs 64 per quintal. The state government is actively taking up this matter with the central government to find a balanced and fair resolution that supports both the farmers and the agents involved in the procurement process.
The comprehensive preparations and proactive measures undertaken by the Punjab government highlight its commitment to ensuring a successful wheat procurement season, addressing storage challenges, and supporting the agricultural community through fair pricing and efficient logistics.
