In a significant move to enhance industrial and technological growth, Punjab is set to develop a state-of-the-art "Expo City" in Mohali. Spanning 182.8 acres across four villages, this project aims to position the region as a hub for innovation, investment, and employment, particularly for local youth.

Project Overview and Strategic Vision

The Expo City is envisioned as a comprehensive platform for large-scale industrial exhibitions, technology-driven collaborations, and business networking. By focusing on emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, and technology services, it seeks to strengthen Punjab's industrial ecosystem and elevate its status in India's tech landscape. Officials have drawn inspiration from Pragati Maidan in New Delhi, aiming to replicate its success in hosting major trade fairs and conventions.

Key Features and Infrastructure

The project will include several world-class facilities designed to support business activities and international events:

  • Artificial Intelligence Tower: This will be India's first dedicated AI hub, offering modern office spaces for approximately 300 technology companies. It is expected to create a centralized ecosystem for AI-based startups, research organizations, and tech enterprises.
  • Convention Centre: A 5,000-seat facility planned to host national and global trade shows, technology summits, and industrial exhibitions.
  • Hotel: A 300-room hotel within the complex to accommodate delegates, exhibitors, and business travelers attending events.

Land Acquisition and Legal Framework

According to the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) under the Punjab Housing and Urban Development Department, land will be acquired from four villages: Safipur (34.03 acres), Landiyali (6.95 acres), Dharamgarh (68.06 acres), and Rudka (76.84 acres), totaling 182.88 acres. The project is classified as a planned development under Section 2(1)(e), exempting it from requiring consent from gram sabhas or individual landowners under Section 2(2).

A social impact assessment (SIA) has been mandated, with completion expected within six months of notification. This assessment will include a social impact assessment report and a social impact management plan, to be made public as per Section 6 of the Act. Land acquisition will follow the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013, ensuring proper compensation and rehabilitation for affected individuals.
