Indian Railways to Build Mega Coaching Terminals in 20 Cities
Railways Mega Terminals to Boost Capacity in 20 Cities

In a significant move to transform India's rail infrastructure, the Ministry of Railways has unveiled an ambitious plan to develop Mega Coaching Terminals across 20 major cities. This strategic initiative is designed to more than double the network's train handling capacity, directly addressing the chronic congestion experienced during high-demand periods like festivals and seasonal travel.

Addressing Peak Season Congestion

The primary objective behind establishing these mega terminals is to ensure significantly smoother train operations. Indian Railways frequently faces immense pressure during peak travel seasons such as the winter and summer holidays, as well as major festivals. By creating dedicated, large-scale terminals in cities with the highest demand for both arriving and departing trains, the national transporter aims to streamline schedules and reduce delays.

These terminals will be strategically located in key metropolitan hubs, including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, and Ahmedabad. The selection of these 20 cities was based on an analysis of where passenger demand consistently outstrips the current operational capacity.

Ahmedabad and Surat Lead the Way

A tangible example of this plan is already taking shape in Gujarat. One such Mega Coaching Terminal is currently under construction in Ahmedabad. During a recent visit, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw provided concrete details about the project's impact.

He highlighted that while approximately 45 trains currently originate from Ahmedabad, the new facility at Vatva will be a game-changer. "To address this and enhance operational capacity, a Mega Coaching Terminal will be developed at Vatva, where 10 pit lines will be built. This will add capacity for about 45 additional trains, enabling Ahmedabad to operate nearly 150 trains in total," Vaishnaw stated. This represents a massive leap in the city's connectivity and operational prowess.

Furthermore, the minister confirmed that Surat is also slated to receive a dedicated mega coaching terminal, recognizing the high demand originating from the city.

Comprehensive Station Upgrades

The development of mega terminals is being complemented by direct upgrades to existing station infrastructure. In a parallel announcement for Ahmedabad, Minister Vaishnaw revealed that Ahmedabad station will be expanded with three additional platforms, further boosting its ability to manage train traffic.

These improvements are part of a holistic modernization effort. "All platforms will be connected through a concourse roof plaza, and construction of the elevated road is also progressing at a fast pace. This will link both ends of the station through the concourse, elevated road, and foot overbridges," he explained. This integrated approach promises to enhance passenger convenience and fluid movement within the station complex.

This nationwide project to establish Mega Coaching Terminals marks one of the most substantial investments in Indian Railways' passenger infrastructure in recent years, setting the stage for a more robust and efficient travel experience for millions of Indians.
