Summer Rains Hinder Final Phase of Paddy Procurement in Trichy and Delta Districts
Unseasonal summer rainfall across Trichy and the delta districts of Tamil Nadu has significantly disrupted the concluding stage of paddy procurement in the region. In several direct procurement centers within Trichy district, paddy grains delivered by farmers were reported to have been drenched due to the heavy downpours, causing delays and concerns among agricultural stakeholders.
Farmers Face Challenges as Grains Soak in Rain
On a recent Friday, farmers in the Arangur and Ayanapatti areas of Thottiyam block, as well as Vadugapatti in Musiri block, were compelled to dump their paddy near procurement centers. They voiced complaints that their harvested grains had become soaked in the intense rainfall, rendering them unsuitable for standard procurement processes. This situation has exacerbated the logistical challenges faced during the peak harvesting season.
Official Response and Site Inspections
Officials, led by K Kumaravel, the regional manager of the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation (TNCSC) in Trichy, conducted visits to the affected centers to assess the damage and listen to farmers' grievances. During these inspections, it was noted that many procurement centers are situated in low-lying areas, which contributed to the grains being submerged in rainwater. Kumaravel emphasized the urgency of the situation by instructing staff to accelerate the procurement process. He stated, "We have directed the staff to deploy additional equipment and procure the grains from farmers as quickly as possible to mitigate further losses."
Harvesting Progress and Agricultural Overview
In the broader delta region, approximately five lakh hectares have been cultivated with samba and thaladi paddy crops. Harvesting has been completed on more than 90% of these crops, with the remaining portion expected to be gathered within the next two weeks. Specifically, in Trichy district, out of a total of 53,000 hectares dedicated to samba and thaladi crops, harvesting has been finalized on 47,000 hectares. B Vasantha, the joint director of the district agriculture department, provided insights into the ongoing activities, noting, "Cultivation and harvesting operations are actively progressing in blocks such as Uppiliapuram, Lalgudi, Thiruverumbur, Musiri, and Manikandam, and are anticipated to conclude by the end of this month."
Procurement Statistics and Future Projections
To date, the TNCSC has procured around 1,13,000 tonnes of paddy in Trichy district alone. Officials project that an additional 20,000 tonnes will be procured by the season's end, contingent upon favorable weather conditions and efficient logistical support. The disruption caused by the summer rains underscores the vulnerability of agricultural processes to climatic variations and highlights the need for adaptive strategies in procurement and storage infrastructure.
