India's ambitious Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project has reached a significant milestone as the Surat-Bilimora section enters its final construction phase. The National High Speed Rail Corporation Ltd (NHSRCL) is accelerating work on the country's first high-speed rail corridor, bringing India closer to its bullet train dream.
Project Progress and Key Milestones
The 47-kilometer priority corridor between Surat and Bilimora is now in an advanced stage of construction, with all civil works and track-bed laying fully completed. According to the Ministry of Railways, this section is expected to become operational by 2027, marking a crucial step toward the complete project.
The entire 508-kilometer Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor will pass through Gujarat, Maharashtra, and the Union Territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has confirmed that the complete project is targeted for completion by December 2029.
Engineering Marvel and Construction Achievements
The project showcases advanced engineering techniques matching international standards, with 465 kilometers (approximately 85% of the route) being built on viaducts. This approach ensures minimal land disturbance and enhanced safety features.
Significant progress has been made in viaduct construction, with 326 kilometers already completed. Additionally, 17 out of 25 river bridges have been successfully constructed, demonstrating the project's steady advancement despite technical challenges.
Station Network and Design Excellence
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor will feature 12 strategically located stations: Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Billimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently visited the under-construction Surat bullet train station, reviewing the progress of the MAHSR corridor. The Surat station's design draws inspiration from the city's globally renowned diamond industry, combining elegance with functionality.
The station has been planned with strong emphasis on passenger comfort, featuring spacious waiting lounges, restrooms, and retail outlets. It will offer seamless multi-modal connectivity with the Surat Metro, city buses, and the Indian Railways network.
Phased Operational Plan
The project will be operational in phases, with services expected to extend to Thane by 2028 and finally reach Mumbai by 2029. This phased approach ensures systematic testing and gradual integration of the high-speed rail system into India's transportation network.
