The incident took place around 7 PM when Suresh Sharma, a 55-year-old security guard, went to switch on the lights at the ETP. Suddenly, a leak of toxic gas caused him to collapse on the spot. In a brave but ill-fated rescue attempt, five other workers—Mohd Hameed, Dharmendra Kumar, Pradeep Kumar, Anil Kumar, and Bittu, all aged in their mid-30s to early 40s—tried to save Sharma but also lost consciousness after inhaling the hazardous fumes. Fortunately, more than 80 other workers present at the mill managed to escape unharmed, avoiding a larger catastrophe.

Police Superintendent Suraj Rai stated that preliminary findings indicate the workers inhaled toxic fumes from the treatment plant, leading to their unconsciousness. One person was declared dead at the scene, while the five others were admitted to private hospitals in critical condition.
