Toxic Gas Leak at Baghpat Sugar Mill Claims Life, Leaves Five in Critical Condition
A tragic industrial accident unfolded on Tuesday night in Baghpat district, Uttar Pradesh, resulting in one fatality and multiple critical injuries. A security guard lost his life, and five workers were rushed to hospital after a toxic gas leak occurred at a sugar mill's effluent treatment plant (ETP) located in Malakpur village of the Baraut area.
Details of the Incident
The incident took place around 7 PM when Suresh Sharma, a 55-year-old security guard, went to switch on the lights at the ETP. Suddenly, a leak of toxic gas caused him to collapse on the spot. In a brave but ill-fated rescue attempt, five other workers—Mohd Hameed, Dharmendra Kumar, Pradeep Kumar, Anil Kumar, and Bittu, all aged in their mid-30s to early 40s—tried to save Sharma but also lost consciousness after inhaling the hazardous fumes. Fortunately, more than 80 other workers present at the mill managed to escape unharmed, avoiding a larger catastrophe.
Police Investigation and Official Response
Police Superintendent Suraj Rai stated that preliminary findings indicate the workers inhaled toxic fumes from the treatment plant, leading to their unconsciousness. One person was declared dead at the scene, while the five others were admitted to private hospitals in critical condition. As of now, no formal complaint has been filed, but authorities are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the leak.
Following the incident, police and administrative officials, including the SP and sub-divisional magistrate, promptly arrived at the site. They assured the public that appropriate action would be taken to address the situation and prevent future occurrences.
Family Protests and Tense Atmosphere
The family members of the deceased Suresh Sharma reached the spot shortly after the accident and alleged negligence on the part of the sugar mill management. The situation remained tense on Wednesday morning as they protested at the hospital, refusing to accept the body until senior officials from the sugar mill arrived to address their concerns.
Protests continued throughout the day, with a heavy police force deployed to maintain order and ensure safety. The family's demands for accountability and justice highlighted broader issues of industrial safety and worker protection in the region.
Broader Implications and Safety Concerns
This incident raises serious questions about the safety protocols at industrial facilities, particularly in effluent treatment plants where hazardous materials are handled. The rapid response from authorities underscores the urgency of such cases, but the family's allegations of negligence point to potential lapses in maintenance or emergency preparedness.
As investigations proceed, stakeholders are calling for stricter enforcement of safety regulations to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The community in Baghpat remains on edge, awaiting further developments and hoping for justice for the victims and their families.
