Ahmedabad: The Electric Loco Shed at Vatva, part of Western Railway’s Ahmedabad Division, has been honored with the GreenCo rating by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII)-Green Business Centre (GBC). The award will be presented at the 15th GreenCo Summit 2026 in New Delhi.
First for Western Railway
Divisional Railway Manager Ved Prakash stated that this is the first time an electric loco shed in Western Railway has received this rating. GreenCo is an Indian evaluation framework that assesses environmental performance across multiple parameters.
Key Parameters Assessed
The framework evaluates energy efficiency, water conservation, renewable energy usage, greenhouse gas reduction, waste management, materials conservation, recycling, green supply chains, green infrastructure, and environmental innovation.
Vatva Shed Initiatives
The Vatva shed has achieved a complete shift from diesel-based operations to electric traction, reducing diesel consumption to zero and cutting emissions by nearly 100%. Other measures include:
- Solar power deployment
- Rainwater recharge systems
- Zero wastewater discharge practices
- LED and sensor-based lighting
- A ‘zero waste to landfill’ approach
These initiatives have significantly minimized the environmental footprint of the facility.
Recognition and Impact
The GreenCo rating underscores the shed’s commitment to sustainable practices. This recognition sets a benchmark for other railway facilities in the region. The achievement aligns with broader national goals of reducing carbon emissions and promoting green infrastructure.
