West Asia Conflict Disrupts AC Production as Summer Demand Looms

Ahead of the peak summer season, a traditionally brisk business period for consumer durables companies, air conditioner manufacturers are facing significant production challenges due to the ongoing West Asia conflict. Industry executives report that restricted supplies of LPG and shortages of petrochemicals are beginning to impact manufacturing processes, potentially threatening the availability of AC units during the high-demand period.

Supply Chain Vulnerabilities Exposed

The conflict between Israel and Iran has created supply-side constraints that are now reverberating through India's AC manufacturing sector. LPG is crucial for processes such as brazing of copper and curing of powder-coating in AC production, while petrochemicals are essential for manufacturing polymers used in plastic mechanical parts of AC units. Although no major disruption has occurred on the ground yet, industry leaders express concern that continued supply issues could pose serious challenges as summer approaches.

"We are facing certain challenges related to production—first is availability of LPG and PNG which are required for certain manufacturing processes in ACs and other product categories," said Vikas Gupta, Managing Director of Operations at PG Electroplast, which manufactures ACs and other white goods for major brands. "Also, scarcity of petrochemicals is causing some disruption in day-to-day production. We are working with our vendors to curb wider impact."

Consumer Impact and Price Pressures

For consumers already facing higher prices for new AC stock expected to hit shelves around April-May, the war-led supply crunch could impose additional financial burdens. New energy norms have already pushed AC prices up by approximately 5%, with another 8%-10% increase anticipated due to high commodity costs, according to B Thiagarajan, Managing Director at Blue Star.

"There is apprehension within the industry about supply challenges," Thiagarajan noted, highlighting the vulnerability arising from supply concentration. Approximately 88% of India's LPG imports come from the Middle East, representing roughly 54% of the country's total LPG demand.

Industry Response and Alternative Strategies

Manufacturers are actively exploring alternatives and optimizing procurement strategies to mitigate the impact. Kamal Nandi, Business Head and Executive Vice President at Godrej Enterprises Group's appliances business, confirmed that "geopolitical tension in the Middle East has started creating some supply-side constraints across certain input materials used in AC manufacturing." The company is working closely with vendors to ensure production continuity.

Beyond LPG limitations, availability of key plastic raw materials like Polypropylene and Polystyrene has become meagre, accompanied by sharp price increases. Epack Durable is investigating alternatives for brazing copper for ACs, though this approach would increase production costs, according to MD & CEO Ajay Singhania.

Broader Implications and Future Outlook

The timing of these disruptions is particularly concerning given meteorological forecasts. Temperatures have already begun rising in parts of India, and some weather models suggest the possibility of El Niño conditions later this year, potentially extending the summer season. This combination of increased demand and constrained supply could create significant market challenges.

Sumit Pokharna, Vice President of Fundamental Research at Kotak Securities, warned that "if disruptions continue, the supply gap could be significant." Meanwhile, some companies like Epack Durable are diversifying their focus, ramping up production of induction cooktops to capitalize on surging demand in alternative product categories.

As the industry navigates these complex challenges, manufacturers remain hopeful that geopolitical tensions will subside before the peak summer season arrives. However, the current situation underscores the interconnected nature of global supply chains and their vulnerability to international conflicts, particularly for industries dependent on Middle Eastern resources.
