India's wholesale price index (WPI)-based inflation surged to 8.30% in April, up from 7.55% in March, primarily driven by a steep rise in crude oil prices and higher input costs across various sectors. The data released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry on Friday showed that the inflation rate was higher than market expectations.
Key Drivers of Inflation
The main contributor to the acceleration in wholesale price inflation was the sharp increase in crude oil prices, which rose by over 10% month-on-month in April. This led to higher costs for petroleum products and other energy-intensive goods. Additionally, prices of manufactured products, which account for a significant weight in the WPI basket, also rose due to rising input costs.
Fuel and Power Segment
In the fuel and power segment, inflation stood at 24.81% in April, compared to 21.48% in March. This was largely due to the surge in global crude oil prices, which impacted domestic prices of petrol, diesel, and LPG.
Manufactured Products
Inflation in manufactured products rose to 6.34% in April from 5.78% in March. Prices of basic metals, chemicals, and food products saw notable increases.
Food Inflation
Food inflation, as measured by the WPI, moderated slightly to 4.20% in April from 4.35% in March. However, prices of vegetables, pulses, and eggs remained elevated.
Implications
The rise in wholesale price inflation is a concern for policymakers as it may eventually feed into retail inflation, which is already above the Reserve Bank of India's comfort zone. The central bank has already raised interest rates in recent months to curb inflationary pressures. Economists expect further monetary tightening in the coming months.
Overall, the data underscores the challenges posed by high global commodity prices and supply chain disruptions, which continue to impact the Indian economy. The government has taken several measures to cool prices, including reducing excise duties on petrol and diesel and banning wheat exports. However, the impact of these measures may take time to materialize.
