In a significant move for Bengaluru's urban infrastructure, the Greater Bengaluru Authority has kickstarted major redevelopment projects focusing on a historic market and a prominent lake. The initiatives aim to modernise facilities while preserving their cultural and environmental significance.
Russell Market to Get a Modern Makeover
Maheshwar Rao, the Chief Commissioner of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), has issued a directive to officials to invite tenders for the comprehensive redevelopment of the iconic Russell Market in Shivajinagar. Rao inspected the area, which falls under the Bengaluru Central city corporation, and confirmed that the detailed project report (DPR) is now ready for execution.
Emphasising a balanced approach, Rao stated that the heritage structure requires modernisation while carefully preserving its legacy. The vision is to transform it into a vibrant, sustainable, and people-friendly marketplace. To ensure minimal disruption to daily commerce, he has instructed officials to arrange temporary facilities for the existing traders before the construction work begins.
Shivajinagar MLA Rizwan Arshad has pledged full cooperation for the project. He highlighted that the redesigned market will prioritise ease of movement, better visibility, and enhanced accessibility. This collaborative approach is intended to ensure the project's smooth execution without any local issues.
Citizens' Waterway Project at Ulsoor Lake
In a parallel development aimed at boosting the city's blue-green infrastructure, GBA chief Maheshwar Rao has also instructed corporation officials to create a dedicated citizens' waterway near Ulsoor Lake. This project is modeled on the successful K-100 stormwater drain initiative.
After inspecting three inlets at the site on Thursday, Rao explained that this initiative will enhance connectivity and improve public spaces around the lake. Currently, work on a walking track and a Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) retaining wall is already in progress.
However, several components are still pending, including the redesigning of the kalyani (stepped tank), development of an island, and desilting work. Rao has directed officials to seek necessary approvals from defence authorities to complete the walking track, ensuring uninterrupted public access to the rejuvenated area.
The GBA stated that the overarching goal of the Ulsoor Lake project is to make the landmark more accessible to citizens while promoting environmental sustainability.
Path Forward for Bengaluru's Landmarks
These two projects underscore a growing focus in Bengaluru on upgrading public infrastructure with a sensitive touch. The Russell Market redevelopment tackles the challenge of urban commercial spaces, aiming to retain historical character while introducing modern amenities. Simultaneously, the Ulsoor Lake waterway project represents a continued effort to reclaim and revitalise the city's water bodies, creating valuable ecological and recreational hubs for its residents.
The direct involvement of the GBA chief in issuing clear directives indicates a push for timely implementation. The success of these projects will hinge on efficient tender processes, continued stakeholder cooperation, and meticulous execution that stays true to the stated goals of heritage preservation, sustainability, and public convenience.
