Chandigarh to Build 700+ Govt Housing Units in Sectors 25 & 43 to Ease Shortage
Chandigarh Plans 700+ New Govt Housing Units

In a significant move to alleviate the chronic shortage of official accommodation, the Chandigarh administration has unveiled plans to construct more than 700 new government housing units. The projects will be developed on reclaimed land in Sectors 25 and 43, directly addressing the pressing demand from thousands of government employees currently on waiting lists.

Addressing a Critical Shortfall

The decision comes after a recent survey highlighted a severe demand-supply gap across several housing categories, particularly for Types 10 to 13. This shortage persists despite a policy that reserves 40% of the existing housing stock for Group B and C employees. A UT official confirmed that the waiting period in some categories is "extremely long," with demand continuing to far outstrip the current supply. To expedite the process, the UT engineering department has directed its urban planning wing to finalize the layouts for the new units promptly.

Project Details and Site Potential

The new housing scheme will see a phased development across two key locations. In Sector 25, approximately 250 units will be built on land reclaimed following slum demolition. Sector 43, however, holds even greater potential, with space for up to 2,000 units. The initial phase will see about 500 units constructed there, with work slated to begin in the upcoming financial year. The majority of the new houses will be 2BHK configurations. This new construction is in addition to 150 units already being planned specifically for UT police personnel.

Focus on Sustainable Urban Living

The project has received high-level attention to ensure it meets modern urban living standards. Earlier this month, Punjab Governor and UT Administrator, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria, personally inspected multiple sites, including the Sector 43 location, IT Habitat at IT Park, Sanjay Colony, and the CHB's Sector 53 project. During his review, he issued clear directives to officials to integrate essential amenities within the housing layouts. These include facilities like dhobi ghats, grocery shops, and basic commercial spaces. The administrator emphasized creating sustainable communities and stressed the importance of dedicated allotment provisions for government staff. This initiative aims to reduce their reliance on housing rent allowances and provide long-term, stable housing solutions.

The construction of these 700+ units marks a crucial step by the Chandigarh Administration to bridge the housing gap for its workforce, promising a more secure and planned urban future for its employees.
