Greater Noida's Ganga Water Project Nears Completion, Full Supply by March 2026
Ganga Water for All Greater Noida Sectors by March 2026

Residents of Greater Noida are on the cusp of a major infrastructural milestone as the long-awaited Ganga water supply project nears its final stage of completion. Officials have announced that the entire network of sectors in the planned city is expected to receive Gangajal by March 2026, marking the culmination of a project conceived nearly two decades ago.

Current Status and Project Reach

As of now, the benefits of the project are already flowing to a vast majority of the area. Ganga water is currently being supplied to 54 out of the total 58 sectors in Greater Noida. Additionally, six villages in the vicinity—Birondi, Bironda, Aicher, Namoli, Nato ki Madiya, and Balla ki Madiya—are already connected to this network. The focus now is on the remaining four sectors, which are primarily located in the Greater Noida West region.

Authorities have confirmed that the work to connect these final sectors is underway and is scheduled to be finished by the target date of March 2026. Once this phase is complete, the entire urban footprint of Greater Noida, along with the already-connected villages, will have access to Ganga water. Furthermore, plans are being drafted to extend this supply in a phased manner to all other villages in the region.

A Project Decades in the Making

This transformative water supply initiative has been a long journey. First conceived in the year 2005, the project took approximately 17 years to become operational. The physical execution involved creating a massive 176-kilometre pipeline network between 2012 and 2014. This pipeline is the lifeline, carrying water from the Upper Ganga Canal in Hapur district all the way to Greater Noida.

The project, built at an estimated cost of ₹850 crore, was officially inaugurated by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on November 1, 2022. However, the rollout faced delays, particularly for Greater Noida West, where supply missed the initial March 2023 deadline due to complications with the older distribution network in that area.

Infrastructure Details and Future Work

The core infrastructure, executed by the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA), is largely complete and operational. This includes critical components like the head regulator and intake structure at Dehra village, the water treatment plant (WTP) at Palla village, and over 22 km of large-diameter pipelines that link the intake, treatment plant, and the master reservoir.

For the internal distribution, significant progress has been made. Seventeen underground reservoirs have been completed. Work on three more reservoirs, awarded in October 2024, is in progress and should be done by December 2025. Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh Rajkiya Nirman Nigam (UPRNN) has finished 20 of its allotted 25 reservoirs. The construction of the remaining five is currently stalled due to land disputes and cases pending before the Allahabad High Court.

Upon full implementation, this ambitious project is designed to supply a staggering 210 million litres per day (MLD) of Ganga water, serving a population of more than 10 lakh (1 million) people in Greater Noida. It stands as one of the most significant utility projects in the region, promising to enhance the quality of life and meet the growing water demands of this major industrial and residential hub.
