The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has invited bids for the construction of a Rs 40 crore flyover at Dadi Sati Chowk, one of the city's most congested intersections. The project includes provisions for a future underpass at the junction, aiming to address both immediate and long-term traffic needs.
Project Details
The proposed six-lane flyover will span approximately 750 metres and will be built at a key intersection connecting Dwarka Expressway with Manesar, while also linking Rampura Chowk on NH-48 to Pataudi Road. Once the contract is awarded, the project is expected to take at least two years to complete.
A senior GMDA official stated that the design has been prepared to not only address immediate decongestion needs but also accommodate future traffic growth. The structure will include a reinforced earth (RE) wall and a viaduct, with a provision for a U-turn. Additionally, the RE wall is being planned to support a future underpass along the Rampura-Pataudi Road, allowing for grade separation without major reconstruction later.
Traffic Management
The flyover will be around 11 metres wide, accommodating three lanes in each direction, and will be flanked by 7.5-metre-wide surface roads on both sides to handle local traffic. This design will cater to vehicles heading towards the junction or turning towards Rampura Chowk and Pataudi Road, while through traffic between Dwarka Expressway and Manesar will be diverted onto the elevated stretch.
The junction, surrounded by sectors 85, 86, 89, and 90, has become a major bottleneck over the past few years, especially after the opening of Dwarka Expressway. Many heavy commercial vehicles use this stretch as a bypass to the Kherki Daula toll plaza.
Traffic Volume
According to a GMDA traffic survey, peak-hour traffic volume at the intersection has already reached around 9,770 passenger car units (PCU), leading to long queues and delays. With ongoing residential and commercial growth in the area, the volume is expected to cross 10,000 PCU.
The flyover project was approved by the state government in July 2024 during the authority's 13th meeting. Officials said the design aims to segregate through traffic from intersection-level movement. Vehicles travelling between Dwarka Expressway and Manesar will use the flyover for uninterrupted movement, while those accessing internal sectors or heading towards NH-48 and Pataudi Road will remain on the surface road, reducing conflict points at the junction.
Resident Concerns
Residents have expressed that the flyover is long overdue. Vivek Prakash, a resident of New Town Heights in Sector 86, said, "Between 8.30am and 9.30am, and again from 5.30pm to 7.30pm, there are long queues and it takes multiple signal cycles to cross the junction. While traffic police try to manage the flow, the pressure is too high and delays are inevitable. The flyover is definitely needed, but execution will be critical. If lanes are blocked for construction without proper planning or alternate routes, the situation could turn into a disaster. Authorities must ensure phased work and clear diversions to avoid complete chaos over the next two years."
