Gurgaon Plans Elevated Corridors on 3 Congested Stretches to Ease Traffic
GMDA Plans Elevated Corridors for Gurgaon's Traffic Hotspots

In a significant move to tackle chronic traffic congestion, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has unveiled plans to construct elevated corridors across three of the city's most notorious bottlenecks. The decision, aimed at ensuring smoother vehicular movement for thousands of daily commuters, targets the older sectors of Gurgaon where road widening is no longer a viable option.

Three Key Stretches Under Scanner

The ambitious proposal, directed by GMDA CEO PC Meena following an on-site inspection on Saturday, will cover Old Railway Road, the Old Delhi-Gurgaon Road, and the link from Mahavir Chowk to IFFCO Chowk. Meena has instructed officials to conduct a detailed feasibility study for these proposed elevated corridors.

The first and crucial corridor is planned for Old Railway Road, an area infamous for peak-hour gridlock. It is expected to begin from Old Railway Road, traverse the Sector 5-6 dividing junction, and extend up to Sheetla Mata Road and Atul Kataria Chowk. This stretch houses a dense mix of courts, government offices, hospitals, educational institutions, and commercial hubs, leading to daily traffic snarls.

Recognising that a metro corridor is also planned for Old Railway Road, Meena has specifically asked the Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation and Gurugram Metro Rail Limited to plan the metro alignment underground. "This will ensure that both the elevated road and metro infrastructure can be developed without clashing," Meena emphasised, adding that design-stage coordination will prevent future delays or land acquisition issues.

Integrated Solutions for Saturated Roads

The second stretch under review is the Old Delhi-Gurgaon Road, from Atul Kataria Chowk to Dundahera at the Haryana-Delhi border. Officials are considering a grade separator (elevated road) here to provide uninterrupted movement between Delhi and Gurgaon, easing pressure on the existing carriageway. This route serves thousands of office-goers heading to Udyog Vihar and connects key residential areas like Palam Vihar and sectors 21, 22, and 23.

Similarly, a feasibility study is being prepared for an elevated link between Mahavir Chowk and IFFCO Chowk via Sukhrali village. This corridor, plagued by constant vehicle pressure, could offer a direct, conflict-free connection to NH-8, significantly improving travel for commuters between Old Gurgaon and Cyber City. It would also enhance access to the IFFCO Chowk metro station and nearby commercial hubs.

A senior GMDA official stated, "Unless we redesign mobility through integrated solutions, congestion will only get worse. Elevated corridors are being examined because on-ground space has reached saturation. Metro and road networks now have to be planned together." The project is also expected to enhance connectivity to the Dwarka Expressway by creating additional linking points from Gurgaon.

Beyond Roads: Park Upgrades Also on Agenda

During the same inspection tour, CEO PC Meena also reviewed the condition of public spaces. He directed the infrastructure-1 division to initiate upgrades and expand public amenities at Leisure Valley Park in Sector 29 and Tau Devi Lal Park in Sector 23A. This indicates a broader focus on improving the city's overall civic infrastructure alongside major transport projects.

The GMDA's plan represents a critical shift towards vertical infrastructure solutions in a city where horizontal expansion is constrained by dense institutional and residential development. The success of these elevated corridors could redefine daily commutes for Gurgaon's residents and set a precedent for other congested Indian metros.
