In a significant development for Gurgaon's infrastructure, the stalled Greater Southern Peripheral Road (GSPR) project has finally received a concrete push forward. After years of delays, officials have announced that the crucial land acquisition process for the project's first phase is set to be completed within the next five months.
High-Level Meeting Sets Timelines
The progress update emerged from a high-level review meeting held on Tuesday, which was chaired by D S Dhesi, Haryana's principal advisor for urban development. During the meeting, officials were directed to expedite the various processes to get the vital road corridor on track.
An official stated that the land acquisition for the outer-sector road is now actively being pursued. "Once the land is acquired by the land acquisition officer, it will be handed over to GMDA for development," the official confirmed.
Details of the First Phase
The initial phase of this arterial road will create a connection between Sector 58 and Sector 67A. This stretch will run parallel to the existing Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) and will link the Gurgaon–Faridabad Road with Sohna Road.
This phase requires the acquisition of a substantial 276 acres of land spread across six villages in the region. The breakdown of land required from each village is as follows:
- Behrampur: 26 acres
- Ullawas: 17 acres
- Kadarpur: 77 acres
- Maidawas: 50 acres
- Ghumaspur: 54 acres
- Badshahpur: 51 acres
The administration has already issued a Section 6 notification for this phase in November, and officials have assured that compensation for landowners will be disbursed during the acquisition process itself.
The Second Phase and Broader Vision
The project's second phase will extend the corridor further, connecting from Sohna Road to the Delhi–Gurgaon Expressway. This leg is even more extensive, requiring approximately 394 acres across eight villages: Aklimpur, Tikli, Sakatpur, Shikohpur, Naurangpur, Badh Gujjar, Manesar, and Nainwal. Officials have indicated that the Section 6 notification for this second phase is scheduled to be issued by February next year.
The overarching goal of the GSPR is to alleviate the chronic traffic congestion on NH-8 and provide a much-needed alternative route for commuters traveling between the Delhi–Gurgaon Expressway and Manesar. The urgency of the project was recently highlighted by Union minister and Gurgaon MP Rao Inderjit Singh, who last week urged officials to speed up the land acquisition process.
Related Infrastructure Boost
In the same review meeting, Dhesi also instructed officials to accelerate planning for the redevelopment of the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR). This directive follows last month's government approval for an elevated corridor between Ghata Chowk and Vatika Chowk.
With this approval, the entire 12-kilometer stretch from Ghata Chowk to NH-8 is slated to be developed as an elevated road. An interchange is planned at Vatika Chowk to ensure seamless connectivity with the Sohna elevated corridor. The redevelopment will be executed in two phases, beginning with the 5.5-kilometer section between Vatika Chowk and NH-8.
Additionally, officials received instructions to fast-track the revamp of two other key roads: Galleria Market Road and Vyapar Kendra Road. This collective push signals a major focus on decongesting Gurgaon's road network and improving intra-city connectivity for its residents and commuters.
