Commuters in Bengaluru's central business district are set to receive major relief as Kamaraj Road, a crucial link shut for over six years, is finally slated to reopen fully in the first week of January 2026. The road has been closed since June 2019 to facilitate the construction of the MG Road underground station for the Pink Line of Namma Metro.
Long-Awaited Restoration After Multiple Delays
The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) took over the stretch in June 2019 for building the underground station. While the initial deadline for restoration was set for 2023, the project faced significant setbacks. Officials cited the Covid-19 pandemic, complex tunnelling work, and technical challenges as reasons for the delay, which pushed the reopening back by several years.
A partial reopening did occur in February 2025, allowing limited one-way traffic from Cauvery Emporium towards Commercial Street. However, the full two-way access remained blocked. Now, with civil works complete, the road has been rebuilt with a white-topped surface and awaits final clearance from traffic police.
Traffic Relief for Central Bengaluru
The complete reopening is expected to significantly ease congestion in the heart of the city. MG Road, Brigade Road, and surrounding areas, which have borne the brunt of diverted traffic, will likely see improved vehicular flow. Commuters travelling from Commercial Street, Dickenson Road, and Cubbon Road towards MG Road can anticipate reduced travel times once the stretch becomes operational from both sides.
Authorities indicate that both sides of Kamaraj Road are likely to be open for traffic from January 2, 2026, pending the formal nod from the traffic police.
Integrated Metro Hub and Future Plans
The newly built underground MG Road station on the Pink Line will integrate with the existing elevated Purple Line station, creating a seamless interchange for passengers. This integration is expected to improve passenger movement significantly once the Pink Line becomes operational.
Despite the removal of over 80 trees during the construction phase, there are plans for a green makeover. Civic agencies, in collaboration with private partners, intend to beautify the Kamaraj Road stretch ahead of the full commencement of station operations, aiming to restore some of the area's aesthetic appeal.
For Bengaluru's daily commuters and businesses in the CBD, the reopening marks the end of a prolonged period of disruption and the restoration of a vital urban artery.
