In a significant move to boost urban mobility, the Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has announced plans for a comprehensive study to launch Water Metro services connecting Mattancherry with Fort Kochi. The announcement was made by KMRL's Managing Director, Loknath Behera, during an interactive session with the local business community.
Addressing Business Community Demands
Lokanath Behera addressed the gathering at a meeting convened by the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industries (ICCI), Mattancherry branch. He directly engaged with merchants and business representatives, acknowledging their long-standing need for improved transportation links. Behera assured the fraternity that the metro agency is committed to taking proactive steps to ensure Mattancherry gains better connectivity through the integrated water metro network.
Key Issues and Promises Made
The business leaders presented several critical issues currently hampering water transport in the region. A primary concern was the frequent disruption of services operated by both the Water Metro and the State Water Transport Department boats during periods of low tide. The merchants urgently requested a permanent solution to this problem.
They specifically urged the KMRL managing director to ensure proper and timely dredging of the waterways to maintain consistent depth and avoid the cancellation of ferry services. In response, Behera promised that KMRL would take necessary steps to carry out dredging operations effectively.
Expansion Plans on the Horizon
Beyond the immediate concerns, the business community also pushed for an extension of the water metro's reach. Representatives requested measures to expedite works to extend the water metro services to nearby areas like Thoppumpady and Palluruthy. Interestingly, the meeting also saw a proposal to extend the metro rail line itself to Palluruthy, indicating a holistic vision for multi-modal transit expansion in Greater Kochi.
Lokanath Behera gave a reassuring response to all the demands presented. He stated that KMRL would take all possible steps to implement their suggestions and address the connectivity challenges. This commitment signals a proactive approach by the metro authority to collaborate with local stakeholders and tailor its services to the community's needs.
The planned detailed study for the Mattancherry-Fort Kochi water metro link marks a pivotal step in integrating the historic and commercial zones of Kochi with its modern transit infrastructure, promising a boost to both commerce and tourism.
