In a significant boost to Lucknow's urban infrastructure, a crucial section of the much-anticipated second phase of the Gomti Riverfront Green Corridor will be thrown open to the public on December 25. This partial opening will allow vehicular movement on the Samtamulak crossing to Nishatganj stretch, providing a new signal-free route for commuters and aligning with the city's preparations for a high-profile visit.
Key Stretch Opens Ahead of PM Modi's Visit
The timing of the inauguration is strategic, coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the city on the same day for the inauguration of the Rashtra Prerna Sthal. The Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) has completed major construction works on this segment, enabling immediate vehicular access. This move is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion in the central parts of the city by offering an alternative riverside route.
Project Scope and Phased Completion
The second phase of the green corridor is part of a larger Rs 130 crore infrastructure package. This package includes the construction of bridges over the Kukrail river and related road links designed to streamline traffic flow. The newly operational first phase, spanning 6.8 km from IIM Road to Hardinge Bridge (Pukka Pul), already serves as a popular signal-free corridor.
The second phase extends the network downstream from Pakka Pul-Pipra Ghat. While the Samtamulak-Nishatganj link opens now, finishing touches on the adjoining Nishatganj-Hanuman Setu stretch along Bandha Road will continue after December 25. The ultimate vision is a fully functional, integrated 28 km corridor, with full connectivity extending to Kisan Path projected by late 2026.
Remaining Work and Challenges
LDA officials have confirmed that the second phase is nearing completion. However, one section has faced delays. The stretch connecting Daliganj to Pakka Pul remains under construction, primarily due to the engineering challenges posed by a railway line crossing through the area. This segment is the final piece needed to seamlessly join the two phases of the grand green corridor project.
The phased opening strategy ensures that citizens can start benefiting from the completed sections without waiting for the entire project to be finalized. This development marks a key milestone in Lucknow's journey towards decongesting its roads and enhancing sustainable urban mobility along its iconic riverfront.
