Lucknow's Hazratganj & Naza Market Get Heritage Makeover

The Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) has significantly accelerated its ambitious project to transform two of the city's most prominent commercial areas - Hazratganj and Naza Market. The comprehensive redevelopment initiative aims to enhance public spaces while preserving the heritage character of these iconic locations.

Heritage-Inspired Façade Upgrade Underway

Under the direct supervision of LDA vice chairperson Prathamesh Kumar, who conducted a detailed inspection on Wednesday, the authority is executing façade upgradation and streetscape improvement works along an 850-metre stretch from Hazratganj crossing to the DM residence. This extensive project carries an estimated budget of Rs 16 crore and is being implemented following strict façade control guidelines.

During his inspection, Kumar issued specific instructions to install heritage-style streetlights on both sides of the road while preserving the existing median lights. The market buildings and signage will follow a uniform colour palette, with sample paint on the multilevel parking building already receiving official approval. In a responsive move to traders' demands, Kumar also directed officials to increase the size of signage boards throughout the market area.

Comprehensive Public Space Enhancement

The beautification project extends beyond mere cosmetic improvements to address functional aspects of public infrastructure. The pathways in Hazratganj will undergo complete repair and refurbishment to give them a fresh, organized appearance. Designs for several street furniture elements have been finalized, including:

  • Heritage-style bollards
  • Decorative benches
  • Coordinated dustbins
  • Sandstone planters for pathways

A key focus of the redevelopment involves the Sudarshan statue site and surrounding park, which will receive special attention to create a more organized, heritage-aligned appearance that complements the area's architectural character.

Pedestrian Safety Takes Center Stage at Naza Market

The redevelopment scope extends to the well-known Naza Market, where Plaza Street will undergo significant safety enhancements. During his inspection of Naza Market, Kumar specifically instructed officials to install bollards on Plaza Street to restrict vehicle movement and create safer pedestrian zones.

This pedestrian-focused approach represents a significant shift toward creating more walkable, people-friendly commercial spaces in the heart of Lucknow. The strategic placement of bollards will ensure that shoppers can navigate the market area without the constant threat of vehicular traffic, fundamentally transforming the shopping experience.

The simultaneous development of both Hazratganj and Naza Market underscores LDA's commitment to revitalizing Lucknow's commercial landscape while preserving its unique heritage identity. The projects, once completed, are expected to set new standards for urban redevelopment in historical city centers across Uttar Pradesh.
