The Mohali Municipal Corporation (MC) has taken a decisive step towards regulating the growing trend of residents installing planters, racks, and other temporary structures outside their homes in newly developed sectors. This move aims to curb the encroachment on public land and ensure systematic urban planning.
Addressing Unauthorized Encroachments
The decision was finalized during a recent MC House meeting held on January 10, 2026. Councillors pointed out that in several sectors developed by the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA), residents have been placing items outside their boundaries based on personal convenience. Officials highlighted that this practice is increasingly leading to the illegal occupation of public land.
The unauthorized installations are affecting the designated width of roads and footpaths. Authorities warn that this could create significant future problems for smooth traffic movement and essential sanitation services. To tackle this, the House agreed that a clear, formal policy is urgently needed.
Seeking Coordination with GMADA
The Mohali MC has decided to send an official communication to GMADA to seek clarity and ensure coordination on the issue. The proposed policy, to be outlined in this letter, will stipulate that permission for placing planters and racks will be granted only within a specifically demarcated area outside each house.
Any construction or installation beyond these approved limits will be treated as illegal encroachment and subject to action. This measure is designed to establish uniform rules across all new sectors, thereby reducing potential disputes and confusion among residents.
Aim for Organized Urban Growth
Mayor Amarjit Singh Jiti Sidhu emphasized that the policy's objective is not to harass residents but to ensure planned development. “The aim is to keep the city organised and prevent future complications,” the Mayor stated. The corporation believes that with GMADA's cooperation, the policy can be enforced effectively.
Once implemented, this framework is expected to contribute significantly to orderly urban growth and better civic management in Mohali, ensuring that public spaces remain accessible and functional for all.
